I think some might perhaps be overlooking the humor in the story. My interpretation is that the term "murder" is being used tongue in cheek. It then goes on to say they compiled "dossiers", and describe the "detective work". Certainly the writer is having a bit of fun with the story, it's not meant to be taken literally.

Fascinating how "science" uses words like "murder" which was once understood to mean the killing of a human, and intrinsic to the idea was the understanding that humans were (are) made in the image of God and above/highest in the created order, and of infinite value because of that image. Now we use the words to describe one animal killing another.

I think I will just stick with killing groundhogs, not murdering them...

I just shoot them and don't give a rat if it is acceptable or not! I do harvest cucumbers, then I drop them in spiced hot water and salt and cook them till they turn softer, and I eat them. Love em.
