Stocks are heavy. Balance is nose heavy. Triggers are marginal. If you are just shooting off the bench it will be OK. If you want to compete in 3P or prone a used Anschutz would be a better choice.

I own a few and much prefer over the more attractive Kimber 82 G .
The 12 does have a bulky stock , which can be remedied easily . The action design is superior to the Kimber with it 1 cocking cam and soft at that .
I shoot one at 200 and 300 yds . I drilled and tapped the receiver , weaver bases and old BSquare elevation adjustable rings .
Chamber and barrels are better than the Kimber also , as I had the task of boreccoping and checking dozens of 82 g s as they came into the gon shop . Some 82 chambers were ok others looked like they were chambered with a drill .

We put ours in a new stock, more similar to an Anschutz Supermatch design and it's a great improvement. It shoots just as good as our Win 52-C and 54 Super Match at our long-range rimfire matches.

Not a great trigger but I'm not trigger sensitive and can live with it. I'd sure like to find another one, think they are a highly under rated target gun.

Got it at Richards microfit, it is not listed as being available but if you call they do have the inlet for a model 12. It's also available with a thumb hole in this design as well as others. This stock was semi-fancy and was about $160.00 shipped.

It was 90% inletted and took very little tweaking. I had to inlet the bottom of the forend for the accessory rail and also opened up the action and 2 inches of the barrel channel 1/8" so we could bed it. I also ran the ball mill into the front of the cheek rest slightly so the bolt had more clearance when removing for cleaning.

I see a lot of these rifles on Gunbroker. If you check every once in awhile they go for a decent price too.

Hothands, I would buy that M12 it it's a clean example and priced well. Here's my take on it -

For prone shooting the original M12 stock works pretty good. The comb height is proper for most shooters when using irons. A bit wide in the fore end for some hands (mine included). I have my trigger adjusted down to a reliable 16 oz. If you're a slingshooter, you do not need a superlight trigger pull. My M12 has a Freeland adjustable buttplate and handstop. The action was pillar bedded by Lester Knipe.

It shoots good enough to be almost considered "match grade". It makes a great practice rig and could be used for competition, in a pinch. Like all .22's, it does have it's ammo preferences. I also have an Anschutz 1611 prone rifle which has better ergonomics and accuracy (but also cost approx. 3X the price of a nice M12!).

I bought one of the H&R M12s from the CMP several years ago, and felt it was well worth what I paid for it. I adjusted the trigger down as light as it'd go & still be fairly consistent - IIRC, it was just under 1lb. Mine shot OK, though it was marginal when it comes to cleaning the 100yd smallbore target. I seriously considered ordering a replacement prone stock from Richards Microfit, but then an excellent prone shooter suggested I contact Mac Tilton and ask about trading it for a used Anschutz. I did so, and he offered to trade me a 1411 prone rifle, complete w/Anschutz iron sights for $435 difference. I took him up on it, and have always felt it was the best trade I've ever made, in a lifetime of gun trading.

Of course, with the advantage of 20-20 hindsight, I kinda wish I would've been able to afford to just buy the Anschutz outright, and kept the M12.....
