03/17/16 Hog hunthunt

Went out for a short trip on St. Patrick's day. First half of the hunt had a steady 20mph wind with mixed rain, not good to hunt in. The second half of the hunt was good conditions and we got some great shooting in.

Out of one field we harvested three hogs, 440, 468, and 498. All big and pushing 15lbs for the average. These were all field hogs, not tree line hogs and the amount of fresh holes we're seeing this year is massive compared to the last few years.

Anyway, the 22br was on point again, with only one miss, at 750yds, and I would have redeemed that one if the shot would have presented itself again. Again wind was about 8+ moa at 750.

This time around the bullets performed a little better, only one did not fully expand, which by the way was an ear shot at 500yds. Made me wonder about the bullet construction again.

Anyway, good start to the season. The hogs are going to be thick this year if the amount we're seeing and the fresh holes are any indication.

Think you are right. That 22BR with you behind it would have hit the hog if given another chance.

Sweet...seeing green grass means that in three weeks I should see some here too. I REALLY want to know how you got a dead chuck and his buddies to bite down and hold on to that limb?

I'm in Belmont County, Ohio and you are lucky to see a groundhog in the fields around here. No one knows whats going on. The coyotes can't be killing all the groundhogs.

I live a few counties west of where these chucks were taken. I've watched coyotes catch chucks on 3 different occasions. The full grown chucks don't stand a chance against a pair of hunting coyotes. And the young chucks are even easier of course. We were over run with chucks over this way about 20 years ago, and once the coyotes showed up the chucks were gone in less than 2 years. I only saw one chuck on the farm all of last year. And that one is the first one I've seen on the farm in over 15 years at least.

And great shooting ab!! That is really pretty country over that way. WD

I second Snert with that limb holding procedure

Well, 75gr of compliance. That's how. Lol, seriously though, the teeth are large enough to carry the weight, so I open their mouth and like a hang tag slide them over the limb. First time I've done it with hogs, but I used to do it all the time with coyotes.

Yes it's a 40x, of sorts. It's been welded on, refinished, and modified to a large extent. I call it "The Rat Rod". It's has a Remington long action bolt modified to take savage heads, a firing pin from an old 722, a 40x rimfire stock, and a savage lug. It was a glue in rifle that someone butchered and I traded a 700 action for. Shoots really well.

Thanks for the reply. The chuck population here is practically "0". Hard to believe, I guess the coyotes are to blame.....Rich.

That is great shooting, especially in the wind. I didn't realize that there was such pretty fields that close to Belmont.
