300 Wildcat

I built a 30-375 Ruger, about 3-4 years ago, and like it but if I did it again I would do a 30 Nosler as I think Nosler brass is better than Hornady's 375 Ruger, no necking down from 375 in step, and dies are available. The difference in case volume is not large and the Nosler brass wins out by a smidgen.
How about the 300 NORMA. I believe the capacity is close to the 375 Ruger. Matt

A new unfired 300 Norma case holds 103grs of water. I have a 35 degree improved version that holds right at 111grs. It is pretty scary accurate with 230 Bergers loafing along at 3045fps. It will push them over 3100 pretty easily but it shoots near .5" there instead of in the .1's. I also have a 33" barreled 30-338 Lapua Imp that shoots 230's at 3350fps and a 30-378 Weatherby Imp that shot 150's nearly 4100fps.

Dang... 1200 yd groundhog shots in my part of PA would mean shooting at one two farms over across a two lane road :)

Nice to have someone else that can vouch, that you can launch a 150gr over 4000 fps.

Dean

I'm sure a 30-338 Lapua Imp with a 14 or 15 twist would do it relatively easy too. My 30-378 Imp is a 10 twist and it still shot just under 4100fps. A 300 Rum might even get close with a long enough barrel. We use to shoot 150's 3650fps out of 30-8mm mags, 30-358STA's, and 308 Baer's for rock chucks all the time. Many of those little furry critters were vaporized with 150 Nosler BT's back when they were pretty thin jacketed even out to 8-900yds.

Like IdahoCTD, I have a 30-338Norma Improved, but with a 30° shoulder.
I neck down .338Norma parent brass & end up with 110.0gr capacity on formed cases

Got 215 Hybrids (molyed) to 3200 with no pressure, but settled on 3150 via 91.5gr Retumbo.
This is the launcher...

Defiance Deviant Tactical w/ .750 bolt & 30 MOA integral rail
28" Bartlein 1:10 MTU contour + APA Fat Bastard II brake
A3 sniper fill w/KMW hardware
Defiance (Black Ops) DBM w/ Accurate Lapua mags
Premier 5.25x56 in a Spuhr 4001
Have the new Atlas 5-H bipod on it now, but not in this pic

Weighs 19 lbs. rock & roll, kicks like a .243, and shoots like a friggin' laser. 5.7mils to 1K, sea level.

A standard .300 Norma is a badazz, but the extra few grains allowed from "improving" the Norma case just widens the performance gap between the smaller .532" boltface WinMag & WSM. Plus, its always more fun to wildcat!!!

Might be a super slow twist barrel in the future, but for now these 215s are sufficiently wicked...

I know, ridiculous...right? :)
Jammed them suckas down thru a bushing, got the bolt to close & called it good...
With a 215 stuffed in, here's how FF loads shoot...

I believe that's called "functional beauty"???

Idaho CTD You must have some sort of RUM or variation. What is your experience with it? Thanks Bill

I've owned a few 300RUM's but don't currently have one. I shot a deer with the last one at 812yds back in 2004. My 30-338 Norma Imp is basically the same thing but 2.5" long instead of 2.85" and I have better brass. I use 423 Dakota brass made by Lapua instead of Norma brass. It's tough like normal Lapua brass but it's a bit of a PITA to form. The good thing is 50 rounds should wear this barrel out. The RUM cases would be a lot better if RWS or Lapua would make brass for them.

IdahoCTD,
I looked at building a 300 Dakota and when speaking to the company, they told me that Hornady makes their brass. Do different companies make different cartridges for them? That's the reason I abandoned the project because of the brass.
Thanks,
Lloyd

I think Dakota had Lapua make them this brass and something happened with the deal. Needless to say there was a huge surplus of the stuff that you could buy cheap up until about a year ago and now it's no longer available. I paid 6.99/20 for the first 500 cases I bought and 9.99/20 for the last 880 cases they had a Graf's. I think Graf's had 25,000+ cases of the stuff at one time. Until the 300 and 338 Norma cases came out, and people figured out these cases could be made into them, they probably sat collecting dust. It says Lapua on the case head of these cases. Here is a picture of the case head.

I've heard all of the present Dakota cases are made by Hornady as well.

I absolutely LOVE my 300RUM. I had a stock BDL for 10 yrs with a Burris scope and a limbsaver pad. It kicked like hell and killed everything in front of it. In the last year I did a few mods and it is wonderful. Put an aluminum bedded laminate stock timney trigger, muzzle brake, Nightforce scope, rings and base, and a Harris bipod. It is without a doubt one of the sexiest guns I have ever seen. It pushes 175 gr LRX bullets over 3350 fps. I would not trade this gun for anything. Brass is easy to find. I wish Lapua made it, but brass isn't that hard to get and it's really not that expensive. Just my $.02
