416r stainless

hello all

I currently have a 416r stainless steel barrel it's about 29 inches 1.18 inches od and chambered in 338 rum.

Lately with all my research into the od and if it's safe I have been reading a lot about catastrophic barrel failure and stainless faling over time. Too the point I'm considering ordering a new barrel

Has anyone had and experience or knowledge on this? I know the military runs some 416r . Should I be on the safe side and replace or am I just reading to far into things ?

Some factory "Sako" I think had a few that split like bananas in extremely cold temps. I wouldn't worry about it.

How did you get it that small? Im with butch id shoot it and not worry about it or get a new one with full 1.25 or 1.200 and a bigger better shoulder

Early in thr 90 s some 416 got thru and in use that had a large amount of sulfur which caused fractures . The cleaning agents would attack the inclusions . Just shoot it

The issues may be caused by several contributing factors. The manufacturing process used and steel quality. To put things in perspective I have never heard of a carbon fiber wrapped barrel splitting under normal use. I've been told you can shoot them without the CF wrap. The one manufacture I'm most familiar with turns their barrels down to .500" directly in front of the chamber. Peak pressure is reached still further down the barrel. I know the CF wrap is not done to increase the hoop strength so I buy into being able to shoot it naked. I had two identical rifles brought into the shop the same week. Both had mud in the muzzle and were fired. One bulged the barrel at the muzzle. The other bulged the barrel and it split vertically, in a straight line, back to within 8" of the chamber. I don't have an answer as to why one split and one didn't. The areas that bulged were similar in size.

Yes my shoulder od got a little low when I was tapering. First time doing that on my lathe and it didn't go as planned. Most blanks from shilen are 1.20 will the .02 I'm missing make a huge difference ?

LMAO I know that guy. Has PILES of money, buys 15K rifles on a whim. I give him a quote for a 6K rifle to out shoot his factory Thor rifle (not in the pic) and he balks. Asks me why a match barrel is $350 for cost. Go figure?!?! My apprentice was next to him when it happened. Sh&t flew everywhere.
