scope recommendation

Like the title states im in the market for a scope to put on my 308 savage. .. im at @$400 budget and would like to know your opinions on what i should be looking for in the used scope market. .. thanks for any and all opinions

That will entirely depends on the purpose.

How far is the farthest reasonable shot that you plan to make? Then we can recommend magnification power.

Are you hunting? If so then dawn and dusk light tranmission will be important.

Do you need adjustable turrets? Most hunting scopes don't inside of about 250 yards.

Do you want a multi range recticle like the Boone and Crockett by leupold or just simple crosshairs?

Be as specific as possible.

I will be shooting up to 650 yards ... i dont need tactical turrets or anything tactical for that matter.... i would like a reticle that will have windage and drop compensation marks ...... no need for any illumination. ... this rifle will be mostly or completely for target shooting .... variable magnification is a must ..

I would rather turn the turrets then use a multiple crosshair. It is just as easy to click. I also feel it is more accurate. Some days you need different clicks for the same distance. Most scopes like this are target scopes. Tactical doesn't fit In my Vocabulary. Matt

I am a Leupold fan period. For the completely target shooting I would hit some gun shows and find a used Leupold 24X target scope. I have bought them for $400, and forget any other reticule. For hunting You should be able to pick up a Leupold Vari X 3 in 3x10 X, but finding mil-dots in them for $400 gets harder.

I too am a leupold fan. Take a look at Leupold item #110809 or
114396. You can get some stoney point aftermarket turrets or have the leupold custom shop do you some. These are a lot of scope at a fair price.

Nikon also has product number 6770 on sale on their website. This is a good deal but I would go with 6780. I would probably pick that up if I where you. Im a leupold fan as I said but you can't knock nikons monarch line. Again a great price for all the glass your likely to ever need.

So from what ive been reading online (must be true) it seems like the viper hs is a well liked scope that will fall close into my price range in the used market... would you guys agree this maybe the biggest bang for the buck ?

Vortex is a newer company and I have limited experience with them. They always seem to get mixed reviews for glass quality and clarity in the peripheral areas of the lens. They are certainly gaining market share and selling very well. The Nikon and leupold scopes that I have suggested I KNOW have a proven track record. Weaver may be the very best scope for the money.

Vortex offers a lot for the money in the entry level prs style shooting when you look at the 6-24x50 ffp. Forget the 4-16x50 model. The glass isn't nearly as good. For the lower priced scopes to me I think finding something you can get money back on like a leupold is good. Zeiss has a lower end model that to my eyes had phenomenal glass for that price. I don't know how the turrets track or anything like that but glass glass glass. Haha

16x Super Sniper Mil/ Mil from SWFA. The best value on the market. Different magnification to choose from. But 16x is ideal for all around IMO.

Dan

I have a 20X SS. I had it on a 308 and shot it out to 1000 yards. It was a mil/mil scope and it tracked great! Never lost zero. And for $299!!

Thanks for all the input. .. went above the original budget but i picked up a pst 6x24-50 .. unfortunately the savage i bought is defective so it will be on my 223 for now...

I have a 6x on a .308 and it is great to 400+ and OK at 550. There is nothing out there that is any more durable.

LOL.... That is one hot topic. You can certainly start an aurgument on some sites asking that question. For every recommendation for you can find one against a specific brand, especially on the mid-low end scopes. If it's possible I would save and buy a better quality scope. JMO
Good luck
