Ideal .30BR Velocity?

Hawk Hill (8).jpg I have neglected my .30Br, so I put the barrel on my BAT and loaded some trial loads. The barrel is a cut rifled, 4-groove, Hawk Hill HV at 24". I am about out of H4198 Extreme, so I tried two other powders and shot them along with some loaded with the 4198 extreme. My first load was with 35.0 gr. of 4197 Data and a 115gr. 10X bullet. The velocity was a disappointing 2828 fps and it scored 40/2x on a score target at 100 yards. My next load was 35.0gr. of LT-32 with an EPS 116 gr. bullet. The velocity was 2890 fps and it shot 40/4x. The last is the "standard" load of 34.7 gr. of H4198 Ext. and I also loaded the EPS bullet in these. The velocity was 3027 fps. and the accuracy was 40/3x. I shot these over an Oehler model 35 at 15 feet. I did not use wind flags and the wind was about 6-8 mph from 7-8 o'clock. I was pleased with the accuracy of the LT-32 load but need more velocity (or do I?) James Mock

The H4198 load is about right. Have you got some LT-30? I think that is what you need for the 30BR; the LT-32 just seems too slow.

Thanks Joe. You are correct about the LT-32. 35 Grains fills the neck more than half way up as does the 35 gr. of 4197. I don't have any LT-30 but I may try Re 7 (Hercules). Have you ever shot any Re7 ? James

James I've used Reloder 7 one or 2 times in my first season shooting. It will work. Pete Wass shoots RL7 all the time in his 30BR. If I were you, I 'd get myself a couple of 8 pounders of H4198. It is available just about everywhere and that's what 90% of the 30BR guys are using. Stick with what works. Sure you can use Reloder 7, 2015BR, LT32, LT30, ect., but the only two powders that have proven to work on a consistent basis in the 30BR is H4198 and Vihtavuori N130. Just go to the IBS website and click onto any of the score match results and check out the equipment list. Just don't believe that Jim Cline is using H322, cause he ain't. Sorry JC. By the way Mr. Mock, NICE RIG! I'll give you a few numbers with RL7. 34.4 would Avg around 3080, 34.7 around 3100. 116 Euber Bullets, Oehler 35P 10 ft from muzzle. 22.5 RC bbl 17tw. James when I started playing this game in 2013, some of the guys told me that there are a couple of nodes that you want to be in. Between 2975 and 3000, and 3050 to 3070. But I know guy's that shoot pooch loads at 100 and have done well. Once in a while, I shoot a 30 Gorilla at 100 yards with a pooch load of 30.5 of N120 with a 112 Bibs or Barts that is only going 2920. I've stayed clean the 4 times I've shot that load at 100 last season and even managed to win 1 match with it. The 17tw Krieger barrel that I'm using has a lot of rounds thru it so the x count was low the 4 times that I shot it, two 18X, one 17X and one 16X. I have a new Bartlein 17tw and a new Muller 19tw for that rifle so hopefully my X count will be higher this year.

Dusty, I know that shooter. Some are tight (frugal) by nature and some (like me) by necessity. Good shooting...James

I used to get a kick out of the trapshooters at Thurmont. They'd stop by one of our score matches and freak out about how much money we spent on our gear then go up and shoot trap with a 16,000.00 shotgun.

With reloaded hulls so worn out they had to seal the crimps with wax? You talkin' that bunch?

But those shotguns have great barrel life and never wear out. I have one with about 200,000 rounds down the tube. I wore out before it did.
