If you are going to shoot a doe at 100 yards, shoot it in the head. Dont ruin any meat. The A-max is a great bullet, but dont use it to shoot an animal that close in the boiler room. For close shots, I shoot in the neck or the head. For a 300 yard and beyond, i do go for a heart and lung shot.

I don't eat ribs on a deer, its like chewing on a candle with all the tallow around them.
But I do like to make either a roast, or cube up stew meat, from the neck.

Considering that, two holes thru the ribs wastes less meat (for me) than does a neck shot. And it obviously offers quite a bit more 'wiggle room' for POA/POI deviation shooting from a field position.

Beyond that, and there's just something I don't like about blowing the head of a game animal up/off. But that's 100% personal decision & wouldn't push that on another. Dead is dead...

If I was shooting a 300 WIN Mag I would opt for the 208 Amax. The light bullet (168) will be going really fast and likely cause more meat damage. The heavier bullet will also hit harder farther downrange. We have shot deer over 1300 yards and it still opened. Left a good blood trail.
