rem 222mag from 223 conversion 700 trued - groups

this is a factory bbl 26" 12 twist that was 223 with a bad chamber/throat that I had Bobby Hart set back and rechamber to 222mag,

velocity sweet spot with the sierra 50 bk is 3475-3500 using r/p brass and 7 1/2'
also tried fed match and they were good too. groups were shot at 80F with a 4-6mph wind switching from 4-7oclock

eric,

I got the 223 to replace a 22-250, for pd to 400+. it would not shoot into a bucket as the chamber was slop.

I have had the 222m many a time, 1st shooting b r in the late 60's a 40x I purchased from Bob Hart. never a disappointment.

knew the accuracy, the case would clean the chamber/throat up with not much cut off the rear and the velocity would suit my needs with known accuracy - assuming the bbl was ok.

no fire forming, known accuracy -better than 223 or 204 and brass last forever. velocity enough for my needs.

sent it to Bobby Hart, they scoped the bbl, it was ok, and then rechambered it, crown and touched up the bedding.

you see the result, a factory bbl and I am still tweeking the loads. will try to go again this week. and report any improvements

That looks dang good for a factory barrel and tipped varmint bullets, definitely good for that combo. But... you really think the 222M is a "more accurate" case than the 223R?

more br matches have been won or high placed with the 222 and 222m than the 223 can even count. the ppc and br cases advanced ahead of it for reasons of velocity and being very accurate also.

yes the 223 is a good cartridge but all things being equal, action bbl, load development etc the 222 and 222m will out shoot it hands down given the comparable shooter, conditions etc, - course that is not easy to pull off .

Bob

sorry for creating and argument but this will, I suspect,

No arguments here. I agree completely.

PigButtons, I agree,

picture this, I went today to do a little more tweaking -- 86f 5-10mph north to south variable, range north to south, clear blue fl sky, ---- 100 yd range from bench to target WHITE SAND!!!1

a little mirage - bad!!!

I came to the conclusion the best choice is 2015 with .005 less jump which shot into a button hole. Lt32 seemed to have a wide velocity range even with each charge carefully weighted, the h4198 is the absolute best by a out .100 group size however the velocity is about 75fps less than 2015 and what pd can tell the difference between .250 and .330. --velocity is 3520with 2015 and that is fine with me for a 50 sierra bk.

again a Rem factory bbl with custom chamber etc.

So sorry for the loss of interest in the 222 Mag. I have a number of Coopers but my 222 mag is by far the most accurate of them all. I'm getting ready to build another 222 Mag. This one will be a repeater. I love the performance. Enjoy !!!!

cheep 223 brass and automatics has led many to try making a silk purse out of a sows ear

never has worked, maybe some day cheep will decide to return to performance

I agree the triple deuce and its magnum brother will usually outshoot .223 with short light bullets, but any idea how they compare when loading up long heavies?

Re: rem 222mag from 223 conversion 700 trued - load settled -groups

up-date

today with 2015 and 50 bk walking up the gr wt - at a point the velocity reached 3549fps for 5 shots (7 1/2 primers) and the group was .323. jump was .020.
less jump did not group and higher gr wt lost group. this seems to be the sweet spot.

this again is with a factory 223 12 twist bbl re-chambered go 222m.

fun messing around and now a very usable pd rifle.

May I ask your favorite Powder for 222Mag. I have 50 cases prepped for my Sako. I have 4198 4895 and win 748 on hand also 8208 xor that i use in 204 ruger. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bob hasnt posted for a long time. Maybe PM him ?

Also, see the thread called Duece updated match results. One of the guys shot a 222 mag and you may ask him

Quite old thread, but personally, the 222 mag over the 223 offers a better neck in my opinion. Plus one was designed to shoot in a bolt action. It was also built too improve on the already proven 222, keeping accuracy a priority while improving on speed. Plus, the 222 is a classic.

For the 223, it was designed specifically to feed in auto as priority one, without sacrificing the speed of the 222. But the short neck is not preferable for barrel life, or accuracy. While it is a great cartridge in a bolt action, it does a leave a little accuracy on the table compared to 222, and 222 mag.

I am not sure because I got rid of my 223 before I really had a chance to test it like I have the 222 I currently have. But from the very beginning, the 222 just seemed to shoot any combinination without the work to get it shooting better than my 223 did. This could have just been barrels?

But in 2015, the results posted with a factory barrel alone is special! Trued action or not, proves how good the cartridge is.

Very nice!
