who makes a decent bullet comparator?

I have a Sinclair but I can only get decent results with tangent ogives, any vlds are tough to get a good reading. Anyone else have this problem? I don't really want to go a high as a bob green comparator because its kind of overkill for my application. I just want something for the calipers, any input?

For a store bought one, I like the ones that Sinclair sells for their bullet sorting stand. I sort bullets with a Bob Green "stem to ogive" comparator and only use the Sinclair for measuring loaded seating depth. I find it easy to get repeatable measurements with and I like that it doesn't tie up my calipers by being clamped on. Also, it makes a fair paper weight on calmer days.

Counting the one for their sorting stand, Sinclair does three and they sell others', which is the one you don’t like and why, just so folk won’t try to put you onto the same one or something too similar?

The green one that clamps onto the calipers that has interchangeable inserts. It will read many bullets fine but on VLD's it is a pain to get consistent readings. I have this happen with 6 and 7mm inserts but only with VLD's

Sure your calipers are working properly and the indicator is not loose ? I use these for sorting/measuring bullets .

If the Sinclair inserts are swallowing too much of the projectiles length, then the “Davidson Seating Dept Checkers” might do better. Thinkin’ the Davidson nose pieces will be shorter in the taper leading to the orifice than what Sinclair does with their inserts, a straight simulated ‘throat’ section and then the taper to the orifice.

If not the Davidson’s, then maybe try the Hornady inserts, they’ll fit the green Sinclair body you already have, and are pretty much just a closely sized hole poked through the aluminum insert piece. Sinclair’s Hex Style Bullet Comparators don't think they own your caliper and will work every bit as well as the operator is in their care to consistently align the bullets straight and square to the comparator. I like what I see about Sinclair’s Bullet Sorting Stand and Quick Sorting Comparators, except that I still can’t Quick Sort in .20 caliber.

It's just a vagary of geometry and the relatively soft gilding material involved that if an ogive is long enough it will be very difficult to get repeatable readings using a comparator and a caliper. Make the taper gradual enough and it would become impossible. Seems like the contact will need to be rather nearer the tip than where a regular land-diameter opening will settle.

I know this is an old thread but I have a Vern Juenke ICC calibrated in 99 by vern in mint condition I would sell. Message me with an offer. As far as these machines go I think these are by far the best, theres a reason theyre rare

I to have thought of this but could you not just use a size smaller insert to get a reading higher on the bullet??

That should work ok. I have 2 Hornady inserts (.308 and .223), both are .010" smaller than the bullet diameter. Here is a list I found:

14 inserts for use with the following diameter bullets: 172, 204, 224, 243, 257, 264, 277, 284, 308, 338, 358, 375, 416 and 458.

Hornady makes several 6mm holders. My friend uses one too big, right at or a bit over, imo. I use one that just does get to the ogive

If i had a mini lathe id make one that mimics the seating stem that i use. I used a sinclair and a hornady on my 20 cal 39 SBK's. The measurements were all over the shop by quite a few thou but the base to tip measurements were very close within a thou or 2.

How much are the caliper clamp on comparators?
Using Hornady, you'll need 3 pieces. The insert holder, the caliber specific insert, and what they call the Anvil (on the right) which is a larger flat surface to measure from. To research the prices, try here.

You can also get the case insert and can measure the shoulder setback (comparing cases to ones fired in your rifle, which should be expanded to the chamber). H-tool.jpg

My favorite is to ream or bore to the bore diameter and just put a small chamfer on the edge. The comp will contact where the lands do.
