Hard cases?

I'm looking for a good hard case for my F/TR rifle. Needs to have an internal dimension minimum fo 55"x14" and would like to keep the price under $250-$300. Would prefer to have lock holes for pad locks and what not. Thanks

Check out the Plano 109540 Field locker double long. Inside specs. 54x15.

One of the best cases I have owned is a Pelican 1750. You can pick one of these up on Amazon right now right at $200 with free shipping. They are heavy, but you get what you pay for. May be a little shy on the length measurements, but could always separate the barreled action from the stock.

Good luck!

Another vote for the Pelican 1750. I own 4 of them and they are great! Wouldn't own anything else.

Yep...I'm kinda in the same boat right now. I had a Storm 3300 that was nice, but one of the clasps was broken upon delivery. The manufacturer replaced it of course, but I like the Pelican much better and no issues when I received the Pelican case. Pretty stout case to say the least! I'm not a fan of shipping expensive firearms, but I recently had to because I didn't have the time to make the 6hr trip to the smith. BAT MB action with Krieger tube made it safely in the Pelican...no issues at all!

Pelican 1750 would be a great choice, but they are too short for many FTR rifles, which seems to be the case for OP. I am also interested, as the 1750 is too short for me as well. The Pelican 1770 would probably fit, but is VERY expensive over here (over $1k)

I had a Pelican, that was built like a bank vault. However it was very heavy. Check out Starlight cases. Much lighter, great design, and extremely strong.

There are options but nothing I have found can match the Pelican.
I have tried a few of the others and have used them for going and coming from the range.
The Pelican is the one for travel and hunting trips.
Pelican cases are proven performers for sure.

To me after what I went thru last May 24th, I don't care if my Pelican 1750 weighted 20 more pounds. Was going home from the 100 yard portion of a 3 day state score shoot in Maine when I blacked out going down a hill on a 2 lane road with my newest Ford Ranger pick-up with a brand new Leer 122 hi rise cap on the back. I went off to the right in a ditch, hit a telephone pole head on, 2 small trees head on, flipped onto the drives side, then I woke up to find that I was still sliding waiting for the damn thing to hit something hard to come to an abrupt stop. Well it kept sliding another 40 feet before turning 45 degrees to the right and coming to a stop with a tree branch falling on the passenger door. They had to get me out thru the back window of the truck, the air bag never deployed and I didn't have a scratch on me. My Farley BW rifle with a beautiful Terry Leonard redwood and carbon fiber stock with a March 10-60 tactical was in the bed along with one of my Seb Rests that was in another Pelican case. Both cases were scratched up, but the rifle, scope and rest were in pristine shape thank to those 2 heavy Pelican cases. Some of the guy's that I shoot with told me that I should have a testimonial with pictures on Ford's & Pelican's web-site that they are both built tough! LOL!

Long time user of a Storm im3300... works great, has survived airline baggage gorillas and customs agents in five different countries so far. For actual shipping, yes, the stock comes off, as does the scope. Less leverage for them to push against - I've seen rifles shipped assembled and arrive with the stock cracked at the pistol grip. Once 'in country' the center piece of foam, the one custom cut to fit the various pieces - barreled action, scope, stock, bolt - comes out and sits in the closet. The assembled rifle (Savage 12 F/TR w/ 30" barrel) *just* fits inside diagonally for transport to and from the range.

One thing to note... most air lines charge horrendous 'over-size' baggage fees; most also have waivers or special allowances for 'sporting goods'. Only a few (Delta?) consider firearms cases to fall under 'sporting goods'. Otherwise, the size limit is 62 linear inches, as in length plus width plus height. Run the numbers on most cases capable of protecting a modern F-class rifle with a 30" barrel - almost every one will be over that. A Storm im3300 or Pelican 1750 (cousins, AFAIK) are way over that. Even a Storm im3100 is just a fuzz over. The only way I could fit my rifle in the im3100 is to take the barrel off the action - or lop a couple inches off and go with a 28" barrel. Luckily I've never, ever been dinged by the airline baggage counter folks for an 'over-size' case- all they care about is the weight.

That is one amazing story. Thats why Pelicans cases are best. Yes they can be somtimes heavy to carry with you, but in situations like yours, they will do the work.

Well, I have ordered the Plano 109540 from Optics Planet. Buying that and getting it shipped from the US to New Zealand, I could buy 3 of these for the same as buying a single Pelican 1770 over here. Will see how it goes.

Good choice on the 109540 I have a Pelican 1770 that I have never used. I didn't quite understand how flippin big it was when I ordered it. It is a monster! Eventually, if I ever fly to a match, I think I can get rifle, spotting scope with stand and necessary tools in the 1770.

I apologize for this necro post, but didn't want to start a new thread on this issue, in light of this one. But since this thread is four years old, any updates on "best" hard cases? I have a soft case that was designed for 16" - 18" barreled AR rifles, but I'm looking for a solid hard case for my LMT MWS .308, with 20" barrel plus the full sized Fat Bastard brake (another 3") plus I have the LMT DMR stock on it and the scope on it, etc.

I can't fit into the soft case all the way and frankly, I'm not comfortable using only a soft case to haul/drag/transport my multi-thousand dollar rifle/scope.

Is Pelikan still considered best in class? Or have other manufacturers' stepped up their game in the past four years?

Thanks for the advice.

New to the forum first post so hopefully done correctly. I’m trying to find a hard case for Armalite AR-50A1 rifle and have had no luck so far. Looking preferably for pelican style but at this point any hard case suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for allowing me to join the community

+1 Great case.
