What is the best brass and powder for a 222remington with a 1-12 twist 26" barrel

Lapua brass, and either 4198, 322, or T-32, should get you going.

I concur with Catshooter

H4198 works wonders in my 788. The cartridge was initially designed for a 50gr at 3100fps, but custom barrels/chambers/twists can shift that, but it is a good place to look. For some reason my rifle likes flat base bullets far better than boat tails. I also shoot less than 300y, so the BC difference might not be that critical at that velocity. I'll mention it just so that you might test it yourself (FB vs. BT).

What's best for others may or may not be best for you and your firearm.. It's pretty hard to mess up loading for the triple deuce.. I tried all the tried and true loads/powders/bullets etc, and ended up using reloader 7 and 40 Noslers.. I use Win brass cause it was available and cheaper than Lapua. I also think your answer lies in what your end use is.

Best Brass = Lapua.

Best powder = ???

I am using ADI Benchmark 1 (Burn rate is between H322and Benchmark )With 40 grV-Max.I shoot the rifle out to 250 max so high BC is no real concern to me.

Just blew the dust off my old .222 so my son can use it for coyotes. I worked up a load per Eric's suggestions using 40 gr. Bergers, 24.7 gr. Hodgdon Benchmark, and Winchester cases. Shoots 3/10th of an inch groups out of a stock Remington 700 off bi-pods at 100 yards. Plenty good for hitting coyotes out to 200 yards.

I don't know what's best but, I use 23.6 gr of H322 and 40 nosler bt's. I have also had good luck with 4198 and I use Winchester brass but I suppose lapua brass is best.

Just loaded Barnes 53gr TSX using 23gr 748 for my mates Vixen.Usual load is 60gr Hornady with 24 gr 748.

I have mixed brass ranging from new Winchester to some 30 year old Remington. Don't get any significant difference from using matched cases in my rifle. Anyway, Here's the load that works in all 3 of my rem 700 222's.
mixed cases, 40 gr V max, 22.2 reloader 7, set a little longer than rec'd by Sierra @ 2.185, over a cci 400 primer.

I'm not a big fan of setting up the Chrony when it's 0 or colder outside so I haven't checked mine yet. Quick Load says it should be 3340 fps.

howdy tripledeuce shooters,
i shot group benchrest with a 40xbr, i like norma brass best, with a 52 gr bullet, and not alot of imr4198. there are no bad loads shooting the tripledeuce, any reloading book will do you well.......dan

stacy: My favorite load also, except with Lapua brass. I got the load from the Hodgdon can label years ago. Figured they would not publicize a load that was not known to be accurate, and it has proven to be true.

Every bit as good as the traditional load with H4198.
