MicroStamping: CA Semi-Auto Pistols Required NOW

With a stroke of the pen, all new semi-auto handguns not already on the California approved handgun roster, must have micro-stamping technology, effective immediately. Existing guns on the list are exempt. Bottom line: If Glock, HK, Sig, etc., want to sell a new pistol, not currently on the CA approved roster, the pistol must have micro-stamping. Don't expect any new pistols to be showing up on that roster for quite a while.

I just wonder when CA will require that technology on semi-auto rifles, or ALL guns, including revolvers and rifles. The actual Department of Justice bulletin is below.

In case you don't know what microstamping is;

From Wikipedia, : ballistic imprinting and ballistic engraving are all names given to a controversial[1] technology that has been developed with the goal of aiding in ballistics identification; it involves the use of laser technology to engrave a microscopic marking onto the tip of the firing pin and onto the breech face of a firearm. When the firearm is fired, these etchings are transferred to the primer by the firing pin and to the cartridge case by the breech face, using the pressure created when a round is fired. After the spent cartridges are ejected, these microscopic markings are imprinted on the cartridges, which can then be recovered by police and examined by forensic ballistics experts to obtain information to be used to trace the firearm through its life to the registered owner.[2] This technology was to be required in California starting in 2010, however, it is on hold and law enforcement is specifically exempt.[3] On May 17, 2013 California Attorney Kamala Harris announced that micro-stamping had cleared all technological and patenting hurdles and would be required on newly sold semiautomatics, effective immediately.

So how hard would it be for a criminal to go to a shooting range, pick up micro stamped empties, and scatter them around a crime scene? Sounds like it will make things easier for the gangs to do business, and send the police on false leads.

I am an attorney and live in California. This is clearly an infringement on our Second Amendment rights and needs to be challenged in court. What is sad is that the socialists running this state can summarily impose regulations like this on the people and it will take us years to get this to the Supreme Court.

This law does not effect criminals. Only the legal gun owners.
So it has not effect on the real life or any murder statistics.
The patent owner of this technology will earn money, some politicans and judges and the companys who sale the laser to the industrie.

that's exactly my point. any and all things they've ever done to detour a criminal from using a firearm in a crime has never worked. they push their idea passed others by saying it will aid them in identifying the owner of a gun used in a crime. lawful gun owners aren't who they need to be tracking. they need to be "Micro-chiping" these 8 times over felons they keep letting back out.

I can see it now ..Crooks heading to a local range to pick up range brass and "salting" a crime scene. Then a SWAT team busts in honest Jo or Jane's front door and causing all sorts of mayhem............ Another BRAIN DEAD CALIFORNIAN GOV. IDEA. I also found it interesting that all Law Enforcement pistols were exempt from this, does the State not want to know which LE officer fired shots... I'm guessing no.

Are police departments weapons required to conform to this law? What about federal agencies? The National Guard? The military? If so, it will be interesting to see if any manufacturer will redesign their products so they sell in CA.

Nope, law enforcement is exempt. I believe the rest of the groups you mentioned are as well.

Talked to the Hornady boys at last weekends Harris shoot...the ones who could actually get away from work. They said someone, somewhere, is pushing to microstamp each bullet. Imagin trying to stamp, process, and keep track of which bullet goes into which box whan you are producing FOUR MILLION bullets a day!!!!!

Where/when will it all end???

If I made firearms I would not ship to LE in ca. nor would I work on any of their firearms set in for work. I know LE does not make policy and they are punished for speaking out but drastic times call for drastic measures.

And make no mistake, disarmament is the aim. Look at this quick summary for proof in CA. With one or two exceptions, ALL have passed their chamber of origin. I expect ALL will pass in the other chamber. The governor might veto some (he is a gun owner), but expect most will become law, with some ending in court.

Of course, for reliable feeding, you should take a Dremel with a fine Brightboy polishing tip and smooth out the breech face, extractor, and ...oops, hit the firing pin tip by mistake, too. Oh, well.....I would love to challenge the NY registry of rifling marks info, by taking a pistol, dropping a pinch of 150 grit down the barrel, and firing a round. Try comparing rifling after that! Evil mind at work.
