CCi #450

Yes, that's what I use, but my rifles are all AR-based.

That's what I want to load for is a 16" Ar-15. a few folks have said to use mag primers with the 16" barrel. What powder are you using, I use Ramshot TAC?

I use Varget, but all of my barrels are 20" or longer. When I started reloading 223, I was given load advice which I took, and I've never seen a need to change primer or powder. I don't know which powder is going to be cleaner.

I may have used the wrong wording when I said "clean" I'm not really referring to the powder cleanliness but maybe more so "less flash"

As in with the mag primer does it ignite the powder in a more complete fashion, less powder burning coming out of the barrel? And again this is for a shorter barrel.

The primer will not affect "flash" when it comes to burning ANY powder.
Your going to have to pick the brain of military powder suppliers to find the secret recipie for that one,, ;)

Just wanted to share this photo I took awhile back seeing we are talking about muzzle flash.

Depends on the powder. I use CCI 450 magnum primers with fine ball powder like CFE 223 and Federal Gold Medal Match or CCI BR-4 (non-magnum) primers for short stick powder like IMR 8208 XBR.

I get "flash/bang" type hang fires with CFE-223 if I use normal primers.

In my 6mm Br I use the CCI 450 magnum primers exclusively. Why? Because every one else does. ;)

A quick question also.. If I switch from cci 400 to 450s useing tac should I start low and work my way up like testing a new load? I have a load with tac I like and works fine with 400s. Are these like the difference between remington 1.5 and 5.5 SP primers? Were they are not a true magnum primer but just have a thicker cup?

I see a lot of threads were people really like them useing ball powders like tac.. Just fyi iam useing the markm load of 24.5gr of tac in a 16 inch 5.56 barrel. Or should I expect more pressure out of the 450s?

CCI 450s are hotter than 400s. I wouldn't just throw them onto a hot 400 load, but I've also never had pressure signs show up unexpectedly. I forget the numbers, but they do provide more velocity.

I get better SDs with 450s than 400s with most powders.

Markm uses Wolf primers which are extremely weak, so I'd use caution with his load data and 450s. He likes very gentle ignition, I like it hot, we both get single-digit SDs. I actually just loaded up 23.4gr XBR over CCI 450s under 77gr TMKs loaded to 2.260". SD was 8fps for 20rd... And I threw the powder with a Uni-Flow, no measuring! That XBR flows like water (I was +/- <0.1gr), and the 450s set it off right.

Thank you for your time.. I haven't used any wolf primers.. I will definitely back it down when trying the 450s, they were the only thing left around here at a decent price local. I went to pick up a few thousand today and of course they were all gone.. Once again thanks for the info and help...Robert

Anyone use CCi #450 (small rifle MAGNUM primers) in .223?
It's all I use now.
Tried them with
H335
Varget
R15
8208xbr
Bullets from 40g- 90g.
I've been able to get them all down to low sd and acceptable to low Es (low Sd meaning less then 10) by tweeking powder charge, seating depth and neck tension.
Another added benefit... It's really convenient to have 1 brand of primer and a big stockpile of the same lot number. And, they always seem to be on the shelves.
Edited... Low sd. I can't get Es below 10

Back in the mid 90s when I was seriously chasing the badge, I tested all my 600 yard loads at 600 from a solid concrete bench. Before I settled on the 450s I tested all available primers I could get my hands on. The 450s gave me the best and roundest groups at 600, BR 4s were just as good if not better, then the price differential made me stick with the 450s. Powder wise, I used exclusively N540 back then. No other powder came close the velocity and ammo precision with the combination.

I shot the same load at the monthly 1000 yard matches at Camp Bullis.
