Richards Microfit stocks

Is anyone using a Richards Microfit benchrest style stock? I am looking for a quality laminated stock for a savage target action. I refuse to deal with SSS so please dont recommend them.

i have several of their stocks. couple things you need to know, they are slow, the stocks are rough cut with no clean up after getting off the duplicator. i spent 10 hours on the last one just to get it ready for finish. also the inlets are dicey. if you get an inlet get the 99% fit one and open it yourself for bedding. i would not recommend the 1/16 oversize.

on the other hand if you like hands on and dont mind the wait they are a good deal. good luck

I've owned three Richards stocks. They all went on Winchester actions. Yes, they require some fitting AFTER waiting for delivery. And then sanding and finishing. But I liked all three.
My last stock came from Stocky's, a thumbhole that looks like a Boyd's. Already finished and dropped in a Savage Target action/Criterion bull barrel combo. No work except the pillar bedding.

My experience mirrors matthias, except that I ordered a stock from Richard's current inventory to avoid the wait. My stock had plenty of wood in the grip (thumbhole stock), which allowed me to take it down for a perfect fit. Tedious work, but it got the custom fit I was looking for.

I would avoid a Richard's MicroFit stock for a Savage (this is the company in California). I got a savage stock from them. The outside looked like it had been cut by a hand-chisel and required DAYS of sanding.

Worse, too much wood had been removed in the rear for the rear action screw. We had to re-build the whole rear action inlet with epoxy to be able to anchor a pillar for the rear stock.

With other choices available, I would strongly advise against using a Richard's microfit (of California) stock.

Look at their leftovers/returns, You may not get the color you want, but you won't wait forever. Or, go to stockys stocks and get one. I got an unfinsihed thumbhole (lefthand with right bolt). Sanded it, bedded it and away we went. Very happy with it.

I am a fan of their stocks. I like the sanding and working on it. The work makes me feel more involved in my rifles builds. I would not however use them if I stocked other peoples rifles. They take just a bit more time than most stocks out there. However they have nice wood great styles and cheap.

I've had about 6 Richard's Micro Fit stocks so far. (I've lost count. ;)) All have taken LOTS work to fit and finish. The earlier stocks took more work but they (Richard's) seem like they are getting better.
Be aware that their stocks "Are Not" a drop in thing. Plan on doing work to get them ready for action and final finish. Some of their earlier stocks looked like they were shaped with a dull screw driver. :(
IMHO, Good selection of designs, styles and price makes them a good deal.
Know ahead of time that the wait will be long and lots of work will be needed and you'll be half way there. If you arn't into working in them, don't order one. The amount of work you'll put into their stocks will reflect on the finished product. It will be "Yours". 8)
I've got another on the way. Should be here real soon. ;D

Once again i must tip my hat to this site and the very respectable members who are always willing to help a fellow shooter out. Thank you guys for all the input and hope someday i can repay the favor. I have debated a SSS but they just recently charged my brothers credit card and swore to him that the products shipped. Several weeks went by and nothing showed up. After 4 phone conversations he called his credit card company and disputed the charges.

I have made MANY (20+) stocks using Richards Microfit blanks. I say blanks because that is what I order. I like them to come rough with extra wood so I can do the shaping. I get some stocks roughly inletted. It is rough. Again so I can do a proper job of metal to wood fit or bedding. I have never ordered a 90% finished so I can't say anything. The wood quality has been good, colors are good, and they have been friendly. yes, slow at times. I will continue to use them. Make it clear what you want when you are ordering.
