Loads for 20 Practical, 1-9 twist barrel. Have 40 grain Vmax bullets.

I know this has been done before but I need your help. Today, I loaded up VV-133 up to 25 grains with a 40 grain Vmax bullet. The 24 grain got me within 1 inch, and the 24.5 and 25 were worse, but I know there is something better out there. I'm loading 500 for a prairie dog hunt next week.

I dont know a thing in the world about a 20 practical but i know 133 can be a pain to chase tune in a ppc. Is that a commonly used powder in this cartridge?

Give 8208 and Benchmark a try. CFE also worked very well in my 204 but I haven't tried it in my 20 Practical. Many people get good results with H4198 in the Practical.

Benchmark works good in everything doesn't it??:)

If I was gonna sit down to load 500, I stick with BLC or H335 or similar that you don't have to weigh. jd

I had a fellow give me 750 rounds of 32Vmax with VV-133. I've got to use those on the PD hunt but was looking for something for the 40Vmax with my 9 twist.

I'd say those loads were too hot. My bolt gun shoots good with 23.7 of VV133 and the 40 vmax. Your twist may be an issue. Mostly everyone that shoots the 20P are using 10 or 11 twists.

Right around 25g Benchmark .010"-.015" off the lands in a zero freebore chamber has worked well in every barrel we've had. Depending on barrel length 3650-3750 FPS. Very forgiving load suitable for progressives or thrown charges.

Keep an eye on donuts at the base of the neck after several firings, the 40 vmax .015" off or shorter OAL puts the pressure band in the donut and you start having bullet seating issues, start crushing tips with 20 seaters.

Another go-to is ~26g of H335/WC844.

Thanks.

Also the 34g Nosler FBHP slash Midsouth Varmint Nightmare Extreme slash Midway Dogtown makes a good budget (8 cents per retail) PD load for short range. 4100+ easy. A challenge past 200 yds if the wind kicks up though, I think that bullet has a negative BC ;)

I've got the Benchmark loaded up to 25 grains, along with VV-133 to 23.7 and 24, and H335. Those three should give me something to load those 500 rounds with. Going to the range on Thursday. Thanks to everyone.

I tried 4 powders in my 20P. H-335 and VV-133. Both shot great. I settled on H-335 at 25.0 grs. with the 40 gr V max. Barrel is 1:11.

That was it! 24.5 grains of Benchmark hit the mark. 3750 FPS. I'm loading 800 rounds of it. Lots of work.
