Little hunting action advice

Well I’ve decided to build my hunting rifle now as the last 3 were target. Latest build has wrapped up and looks great and shooting good so far! But I’m ready to start collecting parts for the next one. First part in mind is action.

I want to try a bunch of different actions and so far I own stiller, kelbly and now terminus. For this next build it is specially gears towards big game hunting (mainly moose and black bear). I was leaning towards terminus Helios just cause I’m so please with this terminus, defiance deviant and top of the list to try is bighorn sr3. I like the idea of the crf and mechanical ejector on the bighorn. I also know it holds up well in extreme conditions/dirt and mud a bit better then the defiance will.

rest of the build will come after. Thinking manners eh1 or eh1a, #5 fluted, have a tt special waiting for the action, Hawkins bdl style with wyatts extended box mag.

Stainless M-70 action. Doesn't get any better for a hunting rifle. Durable, reliable, feeds well. I just chambered a 33-28 Nosler on a stainless New M-70. It expect it will become my go to rifle for elk, bear, deer.

Bat hr. Borden timberline, defiance rebel/deviant are all top level. I use mostly the HR.

This. My borden is fabulous, my defience devients are great.

Anything I build here on out will be bat or borden actions. Both are smoother than defiance, and all my defience actions have cosmetic dings, which irritates me, but they do work well and the guns shoot amazingly.

Or CZ 550. 9.3 x 62 through 505 Gibbs. Pick your level of recoil tolerance and pull the trigger. Single set trigger at that.
Good reply ,I think of Hunting Rifles in the True old Day's of Hunting Dangerous Game in Africa .
A Claw Extractor was a must.
I was a lucky Man years back. I hung around with some Great Hunter of Africa and Gun Builders.
One story stands out. It went on about a Hunt in the Camp of Lowe a somewhat well known Man of the time.
This Hunter pulled out His new Weatherby Rifle . The guide took a look at it ,and then place it in the Tent.
The Guide return with a Holland & Holland Rifle Built on a Mauser Action. As I remember the story " This is a Hunting Rifle for Dangerous Game".
Then this was in the Old Days.

I really like Borden Timberline and Alpine actions for hunting rifles smooth as glass. I tried to order one more Friday but missed them. Haven’t tried a Bat HR.

My personal preference is pretty simple and even cheap compared to most others.

I started out with the old Ruger M77 tang safety rifles, and no other fits and functions better for me. The stock is perfect for me, action and simple TWO position safety, 22" sporter barrel --

If I was gonna spend money for a specific hunting gun, I'd just look for one of these in long action, and then spend the money for the particular barrel that I wanted. I wouldn't want to change a thing, except maybe a synthetic stock of the same dimensions.

Ruger are kind of off the beaten path around here, but I think they're a fine hunting rifle. jd

The classy choice would be a Hagn falling block. One day maybe I'll sell a couple cars and get one...
Thanks for posting Evan, I was afraid to say anything in fear of being ostracized from this thread.

What about a Ruger #1 action? Also, Remington custom shop sells Dakota single shot actions as a component. I have hunted with bolt guns my whole life, mostly deer, antelope, axis & a rare elk hunt or two. In recent years I have started hunting with single-shots & I must admit, it has added some new enjoyment. They are super smooth, super strong & simplicity/reliability perfected!

Only thing wrong with the Dakota is the offset firing pin arrangement that will break if you dry fire it.

Ruger No1 is really nice, but it's simply not the same thing as the Hagn. Think Remington 700 vs a Borden Rimrock.

Yes, I heard that about dry firing Dakotas at the DSC this year from the guy selling the Hagn. :) I really liked his action, but the price (which I don't remember) gave me a shock!

Yeah, wasn't kidding when I said sell a couple cars. I think the action alone is like 3500 and a complete rifle is 20,000. Absolutely beautiful though!
