Got both manuals 40 plus years ago. Have not looked at them in years. One of my favorites was the AI version of the 257 Roberts, but never got one. My great uncles were custom gunsmiths in Montrose Co, giving me an early experience with Ackley cartridges. Looking back they were in early on the 6 and 7 mm bores. Was given a set of dies to form 243 Winchester out of 30 06 brass. They were hunters and not competitors, but my cousins told me a story about them claiming, they could win benchrest matches with their 243 bull gun back in the early 60's. Still shoot them. Telling me, the more things change the more they stay the same. Fun read.

This must have been before those Creedmoor lasers?

I've read that the 257 Bob was one of the biggest performance gainers out of the various "Ackley" chambering and one of his favorites. Of course, this was before the 6.5-08 improved was around, aka 260 Ackley Improved! There was a lot to the thinking of 40° shoulders, straight sidewalls and being able to shoot parent cartridge factory ammo if need, without loss of accuracy. P.O. Ackley was an incredible forward thinker.

I've got some old re loading manuals from the late 40's to mid 50's and have found references to Ackley in those. Surprised me how long he has been a leading voice in the sport.

The link provided warns "this is a 12MB file, large if you're on dial up":D:D:D:D

It was also one of the earlier successful wildcats, before Ackley improved it.

The 308 was about the most unimproved ackley version and the 30-30 was about the weirdest imo

Weird? Maybe. But it’s a surprising performer. I used 300 Savage load data (not the top loads though). Did it more as an experiment than anything else.
