Re: Freebore Mug Shots 6BRX

That's good, but you forgot to specify your freebore!
I'll wait to see the print, but some new guys may not know what they are looking at so might be better to edit OP with freebore information. Just my $0.02

Re: Freebore Mug Shots 6BRX

My intension was to leave out the freebore. Let what you see dictate if this is a good one or not. Much whirling around about freebore. The answer will come forth, just having fun. I have 18 to 20 reamers by Forgreens, Clymer, JGS, Henriksen, and PT&G. I know numbers are important.

I may set up more pictures with a different freebore for all to critique.

Fun ain`t it..... ;D

Boyd, got another place to look. Found the invoice with much info, but drawing not in envelope.

Tim,
Neat thread, I have nothing to say just wanted to post to make it easy to follow your thread as you have my attention ;)
Your friend,... Wayne.

Alrighty then, we have a vote by our very own World Record shooter, lead throwing plumber, for .120" thank you Roger.

I wonder if I am suffering from a form of cabin fever???? :)

Re: Freebore Mug Shots 6BRX

Lets have some fun with this.

Some here can disqualify themself from a guess, just because that wouldn`t be any fun.

Re: Freebore Mug Shots 6BRX

The bullet is just started in the case mouth by the seater, then taken to the rifle with striker asssembly removed and then chambered to let the actual max length be achieved by letting the rifle actually seat the bullet

Re: Freebore Mug Shots 6BRX

Not considerably, but yes a few thousandths. Less tension will shorten OAL and more will lengthen it by a smidge

Re: Freebore Mug Shots 6BRX

I disagree. If you soft-seat with .0005" tension, the bullet will basically just touch the lands. If your neck has .004" tension, you can easily achieve .015-.020" bullet engraving. Either way can work fine and produce good accuracy, as can a small to large jump. But, the difference is not a few thousandths.

Re: Freebore Mug Shots 6BRX

I was speaking of reasonable differences in neck tension. I consider .010" to .015" minimal in this discussion of freebore.

Do you mean .010" to .015" bullet engraving or .001" to .0015" neck tension?

I have used tension under .001" on bench rifles and currently load with .004" on a Pierce tactical rifle. Soft seating was once very popular in BR and my .222 40XBR shot very well with it. My tactical rifle also shoots Berger FULLBORE bullets very well with .004" tension and a .030" jump. It is loaded that way for magazine length and to ensure the bullet is not dislodged when feeding.

The 6BR Viper SS I shoot in Mid Range F-Class has a .104" freebore and shoots well with Berger 105 VLD jammed .010" and Sierra 107 MK jumped .015". The seated bullets look similar to your pictures.

Are you saying you want us to try to guess what the free bore is on the reamer that would make those bullets sit where they are in the pictures you posted?

If so the please first tell me what's the "max case" length number on the reamer we are starting from and also what throat angle we are working with (otherwise you are cheating by not giving us enough info to begin to make some intelligent guesses)?

Flat out, if the max case is 1.570" and the throat angle is one and a half degrees, the proposed free bore dimension of .120" is likely too short for those pictures.
