ELR Class What would you teach?

Mother Nature will be one of your biggest foes after learning to load a precise round for your gun and learning the finesse it takes to shoot each shot the same.

That's assuming you already have done the research on what type of equipment it'll take for that discipline.

Class should go over reloading practices bordering on Bench Rest obsession. Lots of belly time on the mat for best position of shooter and gun. Time spent studying proven equipment and how to use it. Lots of time studying Mother Nature and using the info She gives you to use for calculating the hold needed and how to make the right correction.

Not to get too frustrated OR full of yourself on a given target, knowing full well that the wind will blow a shot into the group as well as out.....Know that in LR target shooting you get lucky........A Lot.....;)

I teach a beginner/LR and an advanced/ELR class a couple times a year. First I teach humility and calculating within angular systems of measurement and a little bit of facts about external ballistics that are handy for diagnosing weird things that happen at properly long ranges. Then we cover intro to data gathering, intro to statistics, and data analytics & data visualization. After that we retire to the field to demonstrate how adequate or inadequate what they brought to the class actually is at intermediate distances of up to 1000m. Then we move the targets out a few hundred meters and me or one of my co-instructors do some shooting while students focus on trace reading/impact spotting with spotting scopes. We also work on spotting scope placement and related effects, spotter wind reading & calling, continuous wind hold adjustment, recoil control (which usually involves tactical band-aid application for scope kisses) and then we go back to the 100m range and actually get to advanced weapon/ammo characterization, trajectory confirmation, BC truing and finally take the students out to go shooting at ELR targets like they mean it and have them expecting to hit with a degree of regularity which the student has to define based on the target size, distance and the data they've gathered and statistical analysis that they've done. I don't spend time on how to shoot basics. I expect them to come to class able to pick up any rifle and put down a group that represents what the rifle is capable of from a fully supported position. My students emerge able to make good choices about how far they'll shoot based on the equipment they have on hand which is the goal. I don't care that their gun hits 2km. I care that they can make a good decision about how far the equipment is good to, be it 1350 or 1500 or 1800 or 2000 meters because they know that they have all the fingers and eyes and knowledge they need.
