Could you increase barrel life by lengthening the case neck?

Thinking out loud here, the 6slr claims better life due to the neck and slighyly less powder room. I read about a long necked 6xc that claimed it greatly improved barrel life. Could this same thing be done using the 243AI and form it from some long brass to end up with a .400 neck? I realize this would only work for a guy that likes lots of brass prep, but could you significantly increase useful life with just a longer neck and not less powder also, or does it take both?

Howdy!

Former Savage Arms engineer Bob Greenleaf called the area of concern the powder combustion
" turbulence point ". To help prolonge barrel life, the idea is to keep the " turbulence point " inside the case neck.

Some " Ackley Improved " ( AI ) cartridges use a sharper shoulder angle and sometime w/ a long neck,
to keep the turbulence point in-check.

On my " DEEP 6 " wildcat ( chamber cut by running a 6mm Remington reamer in " short " ) the combination of 26* shoulder angle and l-o-n-g neck keep the turbulence point out of the barrel
throat/leade.

IF you're shooting a repeater, extending the length of the .243Win to include a long(er) neck might be problematic.

IMHO - there's a whole host of wildcats that are in one way or another... derivatives of the basic .243Win case; that wildcatters have added sharper shoulders and long-er necks to.

The popularity of the newer cartridges like 6 X 47L, 6XC, and 6 Creedmoor also suggest that one doesn't have-to-have .243Win level case capacity to get the job done ( precision target shooting ).\
These shorter cases w/ still enough case capacity also allowed for inclusion of a decent neck lg.

I have read that longer necks do increase barrel throat life. Supposedly, the 6mm Remington is easier barrel life than the 243 Winchester even though the 6mm Remington has a slightly larger capacity due to the 6mm Remington's longer neck.
