Berger 85.5/H4895 testing

Loaded these rounds with 23.5 gr of H4895 with varying seating depths of .010 jam to .020 jump in .005” increments.

3 shot groups at 100 yards, no wind.
30” 3 groove Pac Nor
.169” issf reamer

Wasnt thrilled with this test and didn’t have the lab radar set up. Going do some more testing but bump the load up some. Haven’t decided how much yet.

Here is the readout from a QL file I worked up using the 0.169" fb chamber, using a COAL of 2.525". It is only an estimate, and would obviously change, possibly dramatically, depending on how different your COAL/case volume/etc. values are from the inputs I used. Nonetheless, it suggests you might need to be in the 23.7 gr, or possibly even 23.8 gr range to hit OBT Node 4 with a 30" barrel. Based on your initial results, I'd probably try increasing charge weight in 0.1 gr increments up to 23.8 gr, all seated at ~.015" off, just to see how things look. If there is anything promising, I'd go back and run the seating depth test again. Good luck.

I’ll have more information to post once the weather moves out.

I’m actually surprised we haven’t seen anyone post any data with the 85.5’s and H4895 yet, unless I missed it.

I’ve trolled a couple of these threads testing 85.5, I believe I heard H4895 mentioned at least once. I’m wondering if RL-15 would be worthwhile.

I’ve done varget and posted it here. Ned recommended that i try h4895. I have loaded up my tests for pressure and to look for a node but it has taken a backseat to getting my f-class barrel broken in and loads confirmed so i will be ready for the 2020 season.

Understood! Make sure to post some results when you run them.

I ran an OCW on AR-Comp and it had *no* nodes... a straight linear increase in velocity of 25 - 30 fps fpr every 0.3gr powder increase with low single digit SD's.

I’ve seen a hell of lot worse...
You said no wind but that certainly looks like a light 3:00 was present. Regardless .015 seems a reasonable depth for future charge testing.

When I looked at your test I thought exactly what Ned suggested minus his excellent QL graph...:D
