22-6mm Improved

Good morning , I had a great friend who I got this rifle from few months back and finally got around to working on it. He passed before we could it lined out .
It is Rem 700 LA with 1-9 28'' barrel . I have all the dies and tried some of the ones he had started with but necks cracked so I have formed 50 new Hornady brass to start out with .

I fire formed with 50 gr Imr 4831 and it shot good , so here is what I need . I am going to try to shoot some 69 gr TMK with the 9 twist . I have searched for some real world data but could only find it for 77 , 80 gr bullets . I am wanting one step above my Swift .

I know its hard on the barrel but its a hot rod and I want to shoot it like one . I would not be opposed to shoot 60gr Nosler Bt , all I will shoot is coyotes with this gun hopefully flat out to 400 yd line .

Thanks Jason

I had one in a 12 twist it liked 60 FBHP Sierras over 7828 I can’t remebr charge but they were running 4150fps and devestating on crows from 0-400yards. I didn’t run any 4831 I’m sure it will work but mine prefered slower powders.

The one I had for a short time I put together with an 8.5 twist Bartlein @ 24", close to RV contour but .7@ the 24". Wanted to shoot the 73gr Berger. Went up to 53.5gr of H4831SC using WW brass and F210M?. MV was around 3550fps and muzzle blast was unreal. Shot best for me around 49gr and 3300ish. Was looking for something flatter than my XC with 107's for road hunting coyotes as I have heart issues and had 2 strokes so walking is a no go. I am not the brightest bulb and didn't figure in advance that with 13gr more powder and lighter rifle the recoil and muzzle blast made it so I had no idea where misses went as I cannot hold with my left arm/hand like I used to. All in all one of the worst misjudgements I have made, right up there with a couple of marriages!

I bet there was a little blast ! I am thinking of trying some RL 19 with the 69 gr . 13red56 If you had a starting load I would try 7828 , my 280 Ackley loves that with 168 Bergers .
I guess I will get his old 224 Clark also why not as already in neck deep now ! Thanks

If you could get your hands on some RL26 that would likely be your top performing powder, but unless you already have some, good luck finding any.

My dad shoots a straight 22-6mm (not the improved version) with Berger 75gr VLD's and uses RL26 in it.

I will get brass cleaned tomorrow and try some 7828 and work up from there . Yote Hunter is that what you use to shoot coyotes and what does it do to them ?

Found 16lbs of R26 last week! It’s out there....

Today I did some shooting with RL 19 and the 69 gr TMK . I ended up with velocity of 3863 fps with SD of 7 and a group size of .810 at 100 . I will take that for a coyote rifle ! 1.5 high at 100 and 7.75 low at 400 , the barrel probably won't a couple seasons last but it will be fun .

I used nothing but 75gr amax and 90gr smk in mine. I ran 51.5gr of retumbo and got about 3740fps out of my 25” hart barrel.

My Dad used one for coyotes for 4 or 5 seasons.

His was a 12 twist and he ran 55 Bergers at 3950 and 64 Bergers at 3750.

Used 4007ssc for most of the barrel life then switched to R17

flat shooting for sure.

I had a couple coyotes make a mistake today. The 1st one was 320 yd running away and it made the best sound ever !! and the next one was 137 yd and lights out with big explosion !

This thread motivated me get out and shoot my 22-243ai that I haven’t messed with in a couple of years. I shot some 75 Amax @3600fps and some 65 Sierra Gamekings at 4000fps. Primers were flattened just a touch on the 65 Sierras. I think I’ll tune it down a little take it on my annual hog, coyote, and jack rabbit expedition to Texas and New Mexico in a couple of months.

I have been a 220 Swift guy for a long time and will still shoot it . This a step above it though . This 22-6mm imp is a good for coyote hunting rifle at long range varmints and before I burn the barrel out I will try some 55 gr bullets for prairie dog shoot !!

My old friend that I got the 22-6mm imp from had a 224 Clark that I will get before to long , I helped him with a problem with dies for it . He had it set up to shoot 90 gr Starke flat base bullets . He told the story that how he had to buy 2000 bullets for Starke to set up to make them . Hope to get those to shoot also . Mark W what do you think of 22 cal 70 gr Nosler Accubond's ?

I am lucky to have had and shot few rifles from 17 Hornet to 50-90 and this 22-6mm imp is one of my favorites . I was always big fan of 6mm Ackley , 220 Swift , 240 Weatherby ,and 22 Nosler in AR platform for varmints and 7mm Mag , 6.5-300 Weatherby 50-90 for all the rest !

@7mmmag it looks like you and share an affinity for fast and flat shooting cartridges. Unfortunately, I have not tried the Nosler 70 grain Accubonds. I shoot a lot of Sierra bullets since Hornady dropped the Amax line and upped the price of their replacements. I have been thinking about trying some Barnes 62 TSX in the 22-243ai to see how they do.

I shoot one in a 1 - 12 twist and 50 gr Blitzking. I had a hotrod built and shoot it like one. The 50 gr just over 4250 and zero hold over out to 450 yds on a Coyote. Im shooting H380 in mine. I started with H414 and it didnt like that.
