Zeiss V6 VS Zeiss S3

Rob01 has done an excellent review on the Zeiss S3 scope:

In my personal experience, I'm not really sure it is possible to find better glass in a riflescope than high end Schott glass. But the quality of glass that actually goes into the lenses is not the only factor involved in how the sight picture looks to the human eye. For example, the lens coatings used are also a very big deal. There are also other factors that can play into how it might appear or work out for a particular user.

So a more pertinent question might be how good does the glass being compared to Schott glass actually have to be before one can no longer effectively tell (or shoot) the difference? The glass in the S3 is REAL good. Is it as good as Schott glass? Hard to say. I have a few IOR-Valdada scopes with Schott glass, and the quality of the S3 sight picture is certainly right up there in my opinion. Someone else's eyes may perceive the comparison results differently. There are also other features available in the S3 scope that some users might perceive as desirable, including the 34mm tube and possibility the higher magnification (36X). Even though it's a very important aspect, the overall performance of the scope is not solely defined by the glass.

I'm of the thought line that it comes down to the level of detail you can, or need to pick out at various distances under, various lighting conditions, such as sun into shade, during the day or at first light or last light. If you read reviews, they don't usually talk about that a lot. As to what you need to see, what have you had problems with seeing previously? Assign those problems to the scope you want to buy and see what it can do against those issues. As an example, I took a target I saved, that had a double on it, that I could not see with one spotting scope, used it to evaluate a new one at 200yds in a shopping mall parking lot. Did the same sort of thing with binos, when the store opened, during the day, bright day, dull day, broken cloud, and in the evening.

I've since purchased a Zeiss S3 6-36x56mm; here is my review: it's "Bad to the Bone." My new rifle that this is going on will soon be ready.
