Zebra wood stock. Ready for the range. Final post.

Re: The first zebra wood stock is almost done. More photos.

The stock looks really nice. I built a table top out of zebrawood once and man does it smell nasty when you work it but it sure does finish nice. I have been working on a stock for my T/C Encore for a while now (first stock build) out of a chunk of cocobolo I've had sitting around for a while and am curious to find out what you plan to do for the recoil pad? Do they come oversized so you can shape it to fit? PS, I wish I had your jigs, I roughed mine on the bandsaw and then had to use hand scrapers...it's been in the vise a long time.

Re: Bedding completed on the first zebra wood stock. More photos.

I just finished bedding the action and the first inch or so of the barrel on the first zebra wood stock. This was my second attempt, since the first batch of epoxy didn't setup properly. I did get one small bubble around the center action screw. That was really my fault though, I let the stock slip while wrapping the first inner tube. This pour was a little bigger than I normally do, due to the fact that I had to redrill the pillar holes and around the recoil lug area to dig out the the epoxy that didn't setup properly on my first attempt. I made sure to use measuring cups this time around to make sure my mix ratio was right on the money. I could fill the small void caused by the bubble or skim coat the entire area, but I'll probably leave it as is. The bedding came out great and I hate to mess with it just because of that small void.

Hopefully the pictures will be enough to show the bedding process I use. I only drill through the rear action hole to help properly align the stock. I drill the holes for the pillars almost all the way through the stock. I will back drill those holes to the epoxy with a Forster bit to ensure my action screws have a flat and solid contact area.

I'm hoping to have my 6" cross slide dill press vise tomorrow, so I can inlet the trigger and trigger guard areas this week. I have not used a drill press vise before for my inlets, but I'm planning to produce a more exact and professional looking inlet this time around. After that I just need to do a final shaping of the tang area, cut the butt to length, install a recoil pad, final sand and the finish the stock.

I can't wait to get this one to the range!!!!!

Re: Zebra wood stock. Trigger and trigger guard inlets completed. More photos.

I completed the inletting of the trigger guard and trigger area today. I also did a little more shaping on the tang area. Not much left to go. I just need to do the cutout for the bolt handle, install a recoil pad and give it a final shaping and sanding. I plan to have it completed, including the finish, within the next week. Here are a few more photos. I won't be posting anything else until it's completed and ready to go to the range.

Re: Zebra wood stock. Trigger and trigger guard inlets completed. More photos.

So, what's the big deal with the "purple stain"? Somebody didn't like it? ::) I think it looks pretty good myself. And, as far as your stock work, VERY 8) 8) 8) ;D
You gunna keep all those stocks for yourself or can you be talked into parting with one or two or three? And I'am probably not the only one thinking about having one. ;) Mikie likes them. ;D

Re: Zebra wood stock. Trigger and trigger guard inlets completed. More photos.

I loved the purple stain, but my family and shooting buddies didn't. I've got another zebra wood stock going and 4 laminated stocks as well. I'll probably shape one or two of the laminated stocks into more of a tactical profile, since I promised my buddy one. Pretty sure something will end up purple though.

Thanks for your comments and support.

Re: Had to post a few more photos before the finish goes on. Zebra wood stock.

Just going to hit it with a little bleach and then do a final sanding before I apply the polycrylic. I'm really happy with the way this one turned out. The pictures don't even do it justice.

I've made one blank with quartersawn zebrawood and am working on another now with flatsawn. Killer looking stuff and nice work too!

"Look mom, no nut." I like what you did there Sparky. And I don't see anything wrong with a little purple stain. It can't be any worst than a yellow stock with silver and black marbling.

Re: Zebra wood stock. Done! Final photos! Thanks again for everyone’s encouragement.

WOW!!!! That's one really nice looking stock. So were do we start the bidding? Or just let me know what you need to get started on mine!!

I made the recoil pad and cut and installed the action bolts today. That's it. It's all ready for the range. This was shooting 1/4 MOA and I expect it will do the same in this new stock.

Don't worry I have a better front rest to use at the range. Thanks again everyone. I really enjoyed all the comments, suggestions and encouragement.

Actually got to the range with it for the first time with this stock last week. There were only 2 other guys there, but they were immediately drawn to the gun and wanted to know all about it. My brother and I both shot one hole 5 shot groups at 100 yards with it.

Thanks, Tony. It was a fun project(not easy though) and I'm still amazed by the finished product. It far exceeded my hopes and expectations. Everyone that sees it is blown away.

I plan to finish up the second one I have going very soon. I thought I would keep that one as well for a .223 I have, but I think I'm going to keep that rifle in the HS stock. I'll probably sell off the second one when completed. I'll probably inlet and bed it for a Savage 4.4" 3-bolt action and finish it with polyurethane. We'll see. Maybe I'll just leave it with the basic Remington/Savage round tang inlet and the buyer can inlet it for their specific action/barrel.

Happy 4th!
