I couldn't get out this winter or spring due to health problems. However I was out last Thursday hunting ground hogs.

Because of the heat I didn't arrive in the field until after 6:00 PM. I got two ghogs between 7:00 and 8:00 and was about to pack up to go home as the sun started to set when I saw a predator (head and shoulder only) facing me in the tree line.

Wasn't sure if it was a fox or coyote. Had to be sure because PA has a season on foxes and that season had past. I waited and finally the predator emerged from the tree line. I believe it was after the ghog I had shot around 7:15. I ranged it at 261 yards. I long shot for me off my shooting cross sticks especially with the sun going down.

I confirmed it was a coyote, albeit a small one. It was moving cautiously along the tree line sure enough towards the ghog I had shot earlier. It stopped - I had a perfect broadside profile. I sent a 50 Nosler BT from my 223 Rem Weatherby Super Varmint Master. I hit it behind the shoulder but low. It ran about fifty yards the rolled over.

Went to inspect - small indeed, hide covered with menage - ugly sight. The 50 Nosler had gutted it and I was amazed how far it had run with it's guts hanging out. I had a similar situation once before several years ago while hunting ghogs, a coyote giving me a shot while it was going after a dead ghog I had shot earlier.

Sad to say that I've had more success with coyotes, purely by chance, while hunting ghogs in early evening than my predator purpose hunts in the winter and spring. I have an old primo's call and while I've called in a few they usually hang up on me and don't give me a clear shot - still learning this hunting sport. I have no problem calling in foxes but coyotes are something else. The fawn distress call seems to work best here in eastern PA. The guys I know who are really successful hunt at night - not my cup of tea.

Year to date total: 1 (purely by chance):(

Sadly I only have one this year...and it was with my car LOL I'm in California and I used a non-lead bumper so I think I'm good !
