Youth target stock (10/22, or something else?)

I’m considering reconfiguring my old 10/22 for my son to shoot. While I’ve got a lot of ideas, I’m fairly early I to this process. He’s 10, and small for his age.

I measured his arm, and I think he’d need a stock somewhere in the 9.5”-10” LOP range. I’ve spent a good deal of time searching, but can’t find anything suitable.

Ideally I’d find a target stock with adjustable LOP, cheek piece, etc.

My goal is to end up with something light weight, that has the capability to grow with him for a bit. I’d like to be able to use both iron target sights (I’ve got a spare redfield Palma and Olympic set), as well as a scope. A solid sling mount is also a must. Essentially, build a starter smallbore 3-position gun he can learn with that fits him and doesn’t weigh too much that he can’t handle it.

I’m not dead set on it being a 10/22, I just happen to have one.

Edit: I hit enter before I was ready, and can’t change the title. If there’s something else out there like this, I’d sure love to know about it, whether 10/22 or a repeater bolt gun.

thanks in advance for looking

Be on the lookout for a CZ Scout.

1..It''s a bolt gun, so rapid fire is out but it is a mag fed repeater and you can single load a lot easier
2.. it's a little smaller and a whole lot lighter than a 10/22
3... match iron sights are easier to make fit than on a 10/22.
4.....It''s generally more accurate than a 10/22, with the correct ammo

These are some of the reasons I went with the CZ over the 10/22 for my son. When he outgrew the CZ, I sold it for close to what I had in it. Then I built him a custom 10/22 that he still shoots and he's 17 now.

As far as a "short stock" for the 10/22? Wife's arms are much shorter than mine. Couldn't set the rifle in the shoulder position SO, out to the shop I went with the stock. Got out the hand saw and hacked the back off till it fit her. Just cut it off. Worked like a champ. You can have it for the shipping if you want.;)

I may take you up on that! Would you mind PMing me a picture?

Pictures on the way.
Was just thinking, if he's only 10, this cut off 10/22 stock might just be the ticket. And you say you've got an older 10/22 so you have the needed extra parts. Hand guard, action screw, barrel band, etc. Should be a drop in.:D

he’s been rapidly depleting my ammo supply!
First off, thanks very much for the update. That's the name of the game. Glad it worked out for him.:D
I see these young kids trying to site a rifle that's way too long in the butt area. Easy enough to pick up a "beater stock", hack that sucker off so the shooter knows what it's like to shoot in the proper position. Just makes it "that much more fun".;)

And if anybody else needs one, Brownells has a couple different versions. #984-000-001AT and #984-000-002AT, both with 11.5" LOP.
