Your opinion wanted for a scope choice.

Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting here, and I must say i'm glad I found this site. Compared to you guys i'm likely a little green on target/long distance shooting. That being said, I have a question on scope, and scope mount, recommendations. I've found a number of scopes I like very much, and likely any of these would do, but i'd like your advice.

The rifle i'm looking to replace my scope on is a Savage Model 10LE .308 with choate stock, harris bipod, and some other unimportant add ons. I currently have a cheap bushnell 3x9 scope with a two piece mounting system. I DON'T LIKE IT.

I'm looking for something with a magnification of 20-24X, 1/8" moa adjustments, mil dot reticle prefered, and ideally around $400-600 (can't afford the nightforce scope I want ATM).

For a mount i'm looking for something that is one piece, and rock solid.

Unfortunately most of my shooting will have to be 300yrds, or less (right now), but I want the scope to be capable at 800yrds+ for later use.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'll let others suggest the scope since I went for the Zeiss and the Nightforce..

but for the mount I would go for AADMOUNT rings, they are 2 piece but rock solid and on a piccatinny rail they are just as solid as one piece.

Aadland does make one piece mount but it's designed for AR so the scope will be very high.

I have these on my Zeiss 6-24x56 and I switch the scope between my .300 win mag and my 6mm BR and it's spot on every time, no adjustment needed except for height since I have 20MOA rail on the 6mm BR and 0MOA on the 300 win mag. but it's always the same amount of clicks every time.

Two scopes I've purchased in that price range I am very happy with are the Sightron II 6-24x and Nikon Monarch 5-20x. The Nikon does not offer a mil dot in that model, but the Sightron does. They are nearly equal in quality in all regards from what I can tell. I like the Sightron a little better in ways, but the side focus on the Nikon sure is nice.

As for mounts, I've had no problems using a quality Weaver style base and Warne rings. I also use Davidson style bases with Kelby and JJ rings with equal satisfaction. My favorite mounts are the BAT all in one units but doubt they make them for Savage actions. All three of these setups work and while I could spend more, I don't see a reason to do so.

There are so many high quality scopes and mounts out there that if you stick with the mainstream products it is hard to go wrong. A used Leupold could be your best choice for a scope provided you can find it for the right price.

I'll go with Otter & the Sightron II. I have a 6-24x on a 22-250 with mildot & I love it. My brother just bought one.
I don't think you can beat it for the price. Put a WTB ad on this site & I'll bet you'll find one for a reasonable
price. Or you could look for a used Leupold 36x on this site. They go for around 450. to 550.00 & will do you
a little better at 800 yds. Hope this helps.

I used a Burris Black Diamond 6x24 with a hashmark reticle in a set of discount house 4 screw rings and a Pickatinny base for 3 years p-dog shooting.....This rig never failed to perform in a rough environment....You cant see 6mm, 6.5mm bullet holes consistently at 800 yds so for casual shooting and club level compitention you just need a scope that is an aiming devise that tracks well..Later if you need to upgrade the field is open...Definition is more important than magnification..Try some of the high mag cheap scopes..You get small blurs at the low end and big blurs at the top end..My low life opinion..LT

I'd go with an EGW 20 moa steel picatinney rail, Warne QD rings of whatever height you like, and the Sightron. Excellent, repeatable setup, with superb quality in all items.

One more option/opinion -

Farrell one piece picatinny base. Think they can be had in 0, 10 & 20 MOA.
Burris Signature rings (if you can find them)
Sightron scope (whatever flavor you want or can afford)

i shoot 2 savage LRPV'S and a custom savage 6br buy SSS..+1 on the Farrel base..I used the 20moa base w/ the Farrell rings..the first thing you need to hit where you aim is a scope cross hair that does not block the the aim point at yardage( to thick ).... mildots..i don't use them..a ballistic chart for your loads is the way i went...a Weaver 36 fch w/wo dot...a nikon 6-24 fch ...a leupold 5-20 fch...and a good rest..rear bag setup..a load the rifle likes..and plenty of practice with attention to reading the wind is what works for me

Ben762x51 my friend has a rifle like yours, he put a 6.5x20 leupold on that puppy and shoots coyotes out to 500 to 600 yards, he dont allways hit them at that range, but when he does, things stop moving in any language. you can find good deals on leupolds of that power on this site on the classefieds at times. Gabe

I can add my support for Sightron optics. I love their scopes and am trying to find a model that I want now. 1-7 straight tube they came out with for me to use in 3 gun matches.
