Your opinion/experience with 270 Sierra bullets for Elk

Never shot elk with a 270 but used to shoot deer with a 270 and sierra 130s. Dont care for them to hunt with. Used to cut up our own deer and you could see bullet performance.. Blown cores they were always in several pieces That was when I was a kid. Hopefully they have improved them. Doug

I used to shoot Sierra's because they were so accurate. What is your experience of late with Sierra?
Sierras are fine for deer sized game but not optimal for penetration on the larger stuff. Any bullet will kill on an easy cross lung shot and you will get lots of hunters who tell you how good they are. But, the devil is in the details and the simple fact is that post kill dissections show the lack of penetration with shed cores and fragments. The new bonded cores may be different.
There are many good bullets that give both penetation and expansion but the old sierras are not one of them.

I lost a buck last year with a gamechanger. Thought he was hit good. Didnt leave a blood trail. Forgot about last year. I like them for target but my luck for a hunting bullet, aint so good. Doug

In my 270 tikka, I couldn't get good groups with the sierra's over the hornady interlocks. If I could have gotten them to work, they would have been my preferred bullet for the 270.

The Interlock is a better elk bullet for elk than the Sierra. I have always been a fan of Sierra’s bullets but not for elk.

Swift A Frames are the finest expanding bullet on this or any other planet.
25+ years of taking clients on safari proved it to me, time after time.

Nosler Partitions have always worked very well of me. Even hunting the small Sitka blacktail of S.E. Alaska I used Nosler Partitions, could be grizzly just around the corner. The same thing hunting in Montana and Idaho. Use a big gun, good bullets and carry bear spray. A 270 with Partitions is fine for elk, but light for grizzlies.

I have always heard good things about the partitions, but at 1.25-1.60 per bullet, are they really worth it?

For that price, I my gut would tell me to try bergers first and save some money.

That may be true, but why spend the extra money if you do not have to? My question is, are the nosler better than the cheaper bergers.
My 1st comment for the guys complaining about slipped core was going to be what range as for me that cal and bullet wouldn't be used under 200y and i would prefer a 130 140 spirzer and my answer for your question is partition for 200y and under and Berger's if your talking about vld then I would start them at 350y plus all the way out to where the rifle and shooter can consistently hit and keep ft lb at 1500 and above .

For hunting I prefer bonded bullets . I have most brands from accubonds to weldcores.
From bullets that I've recovered bonded expand at lower velocity and hold up at higher velocity.
I just find which bullet shoots best and go with that.
