Wyoming wind damage.

I recently learned that one of our favorite places to shoot rifle silhouette suffered severe damage to their firing line enclosure. LVSA has a great rifle range just outside of town. We Colorado silhouette shooters have been shooting matches there for decades.

I have been told that the debris has been removed already. Plans for replacement structure design and materials are in the early stages. Replacement costs will be an issue as LVSA had minimal insurance coverage on the structure. Work will not start until early spring when the threat of heavy snow and strong winds diminishes.

A local company, Maven Outdoor, has stepped up to organize a fund raise drive to help with rebuilding the facility. I made my donation and am looking forward to winning my Maven RS1 rifle scope. ;)

Next time you are in Lander, Wyoming stop in and see Maven and the new LVSA firing line cover. Any donations will be appreciated. Thanks.

The winds have been bad this year. I-80 has been closed a few times for high wind and tip over risk of high profile vehicles. Just part of living here.. Maven is a cool company.

This past year in NOhio it's been windier that I can ever remember also. I've seen a picture of a Wyoming wind meter, it was a 500 lb iron ball attached to a piece of anchor chain hanging from a cross bar.

My wife and I used to travel the 80 corridor in a tractor trailer years ago.
we always dreaded elk mountain In the winter because of the wind.
we have since changed company’s and only pass through there in the summer time.

If my math is correct that is only 15" in diameter...

Night before last, the wind was so ferocious that I didn’t get a wink of sleep. House was shaking and the noise was crazy. The next morning there were roof shingles on my front yard. Wyoming wind is not for the feint of heart. During the winter season we commonly get steady 40 MPH with gusts of 80+ but a couple years ago we had a gust of 121 MPH. That’s major pucker factor.

At one particular desk job I frequented the highway weather webcams. My favorite location was at Pumpkin Vine south of Laramie. Many days the camera mount was blown sideways by the wind where you could not see the road till persons put it back.

I did not know Maven was a WY company. My introduction to them was mid October on an elk hunt with a buddy from Lyman WY when I paired up with his Marine buddy who didn't know much about ranging and wind calls. He had the 5-30x56 and really liked it, took an elk at 1,003 yards across the canyon in challenging wind at 22F. They dial and track very well from my experience and I will probably pick one up soon.
We had gusts to 80 MPH tuesday her in So Cal and I was assigned to the vaccination clinic at Magic Mountain while the Dodger Stadium and Disneyland ones were cancelled, funny because we have way worse wind in the canyons here. The tie downs on the circus tent were oscillating sounding like a helo rotor like when you're on the freeway with something tied down, incredible amount of stuff gone with the wind, I had to duct tape the syringe trays, laptops, etc. to the carts to keep them attached while the carts were held in place by 5 large traffic cones on each side. Gowns, face shields, all had to be duct taped on. Twelve hours and about 2,000 vaccinations given I got to got home in time to see a large flash of a transformer exploding, looked like lightening, and the neighborhood went dark. I pull in to see my driveway covered with asphalt shingles from the neighbors roof, come thru the door to find a disaster, shingles had smashed thru my sliding glass door so I had shingles, glass, weeds, grass, leaves, and a house covered in dirt and a freezer full of elk that needed to get the generator to it, let alone the door covered up. The other neighbors huge tree is lifting out of the ground so it is coming down this weekend, if the ground was wet and soft it would have taken part of his house out. A couple chimney caps are missing also, plus a bunch of fences. Brutal

Worst wind I ever saw was in around 68 in Boulder Colorado. A friend of the wife's had to abandon her car [Austin Healy Sprite] in the canyon because the wind blew rocks and sand into the winshield sandblasting it so bad you couldn't see out. It also blew the rag top off that car. We went up the next day to help get her car back. Boulder was a war zone of stuff blown down all over town. That car had the front body parts exposed to bare metal from the wind.

Had the same thing happen not far from there up off Sugarloaf Rd. NW county. Wife volunteered to bring some kids home from grade school in about '83. New Toyota sedan got the door bent at the hinges and the kids got covered in shattered glass. No injuries but lots of screaming kids.

I had a 2 week old '86 full size Bronco that got caught in a wind storm at RF. Sand driven by 110 mph gusts stripped the whole passenger side of paint and glass.

I don't know if they want to go through the hassle of doing this, but a gofundme might send some $ to help. Shoot post their address and I'll send a little $. Two weeks in Covid jail stopped my coffee obsession, so I got a couple extra unbudgeted dollars. This site has helped my son numerous times, I'd love to pay it forward.

That is a very nice gesture, Paula. Get a hold of Tcross on this site as he is a member of LVSA. He will be one of the volunteers with hammer in hand.

Why not just take a chance on winning a nice Maven prize?

My personal Thanks go out to Bob for starting this post. I know if he lived nearby, he would be with the rest of us out there volunteering to make our range a better place to shoot again. I am not our club spokesman, heck, I'm not even a board member, but I contribute where I can and try to be involved when I can. So that being said, these are just my views. I don't know Paula Marie Hamilton, pretty sure she doesn't know me, but I would like to Thank her nonetheless for the ideas, the awesome post and good will toward our club. She reinforces my thoughts as to how great this forum is. I'm sure our club would truly appreciate any outright donations and make the best of it toward our rebuild. I struggle with thoughts that there are a lot of communal and personal tragedies that we read about every day out there (and here) and hopefully we get to help those in need when we can. I confess that I would feel a little guilty asking for donations outright (gofund me page type of thing). After all, we are just a gun club that had a building blown down by heavy winds. Nobody got sick, nobody died, nobody lost a home. So I would ask that you not forget those in need during difficult times. Now, on the other hand, (because that was starting to get sad) our range is important to us. The shooting sports are important to us. From Hunter safety to the variety of matches and events that we put on. We shoot year round. And it was a great loss when that building went down. And when Maven stepped up, wanting to donate their optics to create a raffle, well now, if someone chooses to donate to the cause, they have a chance at getting something back. And Maven optics are something pretty cool. You can check out their story on their website or click on the raffle link. I think they share our ideals towards the outdoors and the shooting sports and makes for a worthy cause.

You can click on the buttons under the Scope pictures to see some of the pictures of the damage to the range.
So, what started out as Thank You note to Bob and Paula Marie now seems like a long winded shameless plug towards a raffle. Not what I intended and probably why I do more reading than posting here. Hopefully someone you know will get a nice pair of bino's or a Scope - along with Bob.

The pass east of Walcott i always have called it Fed-Ex hill. Cause there's usually a FedEx truck on its side there.

I wonder what the total insurance bill is every year between Walcott, and elk mountain exits?

As I recall the most notorious section of I-80 is Green River, WY.

I've done a lot of work in Rock Springs and Green River. Heading back to SLC one winter afternoon, just short of Little America, there's a FedEx tractor trailer in the infield, packages all over the place.

I remember those days, we were lucky.
but there’s a bypass in Rawlings I believe that took you north out of the wind.
it was quite a bit out of the way but safe.
