Wyoming Prairie Dogs

My father and I just finished up our first prairie dog hunt in Wyoming with South Fork Outfitters. The hunt was great, lots of dogs out there and the scenery was amazing. I don't know how many of the rascals we got but it was 8 hours a day of non-stop shooting for 3 days. My longest shot ranged at about 650yds and I was amazed at how much you learn the first time you shoot at the 500-750yd range, you definately want to have a scope with a mil-dot reticle. My AR accounted for most of my kills but the Encore 22-250 and 243 did their fair share too. I do wish that I would have bought a clicker-counter to keep track of the hits.

I carry all of my ammo in MTM boxes. Misses go primer up, and kills go primer down.

Tougher to keep score that way with a brass belcher.......

The cabin we were in was nice, they dont have tv or internet in the cabins...it would have been nice to have one or the other but your so whipped from being in the sun all day that you're ready to sleep when you get in anyway. The food was good and was included in the hunt price (cabin was also). For the time and money I would say that anywhere in Wyoming would be good, but Buffalo is was somewhat central between Mt. Rushmore/Crazy Horse and Yellowstone, which are worth going through since you're within 250 miles of either of them already.

They supplied the benches. They also provided transportation to the dog fields, which were about an hour away...would have been a lot of diesel.

It is a nice town, they also told me that the sky out there is a lot bluer than anywhere else. ;D I would also say that you're lucky to live in a place that has so many non-gunshy targets and such nice scenery.

The area is also rich in history. Fort Phil Kearney, Cptn Fetterman, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, Gen Crook.

Im making plans for 2013 to go there via motorhome. I asked if they had a place I could park the rig and they said yes. Will go gunned to the hilt...22-250; 243; 260...all heavy barreled "varminters" and LOTS of ammo for each

I can tell you the weather today is around 100 with good breezes and let offs of over 25-30 mph. and lots of mirage .Perfect day to prairie dog hunt........... if your the prairie dog!

Yeah, the weather while we were there was great, 75-85 in the day with anywhere from no wind to 30mph. 2Dogs, they make a lunch with water/soda for you and take it in a cooler.

They best part about living here is that it is very tough to make a living. Keeps the pretenders out.

ps. It is 100deg again today with amazing Mirage. No wind (5-10mph) thou. Plenty of smoke to keep the sun at bay.
