Cliffe,

Area 16 would be the place to draw a tag, easy hunting, and
plenty of big paddle moose the only prblem with Wy is the luck of the draw, was a resident of Jackson for 10 years and that
area always produces really nice bullwinkles and being out nonresident you can hunt it cowboy style without a guide, on the other hand I believe the last day to apply for a tag is the
last day of feb. If indeed you need more info I can do my best to help you out with some contacts. I have taken many elk and muleys from there. The moose population in that area is pletiful, email me if need more.

Winter was a bit cold this year and we got a good bit of snow in south WY. For the last few years winters been mild and the weathers been good during hunting season. There are lots of moose in WY, I`ve seen big bulls just 30 miles from my home. Dont count on drawing a tag though, not many do. Dont hurt trying but the system they use goes on points you get each year you but in for moose and the more you get the better your chance. You could get REAL lucky and draw your fist year but most people I know that got one waited 6 or 8...

i will have 9 points this year.i sent for area 26 and i think i have a pretty good chance of getting a tag. thanks for the info patchhound. cliffe

Best of luck I'm from Cody origanaly and have 9 preferance points, no luck here. Hope you get one, keep us posted if you draw.
Best of luck,
Chuck

chuck are you still a resident? when is the resident drawing held? i sent for the tag last week and won't find out if i draw til sometime this late spring. i was wondering how you know you had no luck drawing? cliffe

You can go to http://gf.state.wy.us after the drawing date and see if you were so lucky.Yes I'm still a resident I just live in Gillette now.

chuck your one post says no luck here, but the resident draw and the nonresident draw are at the same time 5/1/08. are you just unlucky! cliffe

I've hunted Wyoming twice. Both times I managed to get lucky and hunt with a Wyoming resident which paid off well. Two trips resulted in two nice hunts, a 6x6 bull elk and a 4x4 mulie.

There's some great hunting, and fishing, in Wyoming but a fellow needs to do his homework. There's a lot of official "wilderness" land that can't be hunted unless accompanied by a Wyoming guide. There's also a lot of public land that can be hunted by a DIY non-resident hunter. Worth looking at USFS and BLM land holdings. There is also a huge amount of private land, and hunting it is going to take some prior planning. I found much of the private land is the very productive river/creek bottom land where game likes to live. The steep, nasty stuff up above is public...

Wyoming requires that a fellow apply for his non-resident tag pretty early. I believe the deadline for elk has passed already.

Grizzly country is a subject worthy of consideration. There are places where camping in a tent or soft-side tent-trailer is discouraged due to the grizzly threat. Hunters/campers are also encouraged to keep their food stored in a real "bear box" or at least hang it from a tree and minimize all food scent in camp. When I shot my elk, my Wyoming buddy and I kept our rifles close at hand as apparently some of the bears associate rifle shots with free food... Gave me something to think about while skinning the elk in the field...

Might want to pay attention to the altitude where you're going to be camping, hiking and hunting. On the elk hunt we camped at a little over 9,000' ASL and hiked/hunted to about 11,000' from time to time. Although I was in good shape, it took a few days for my sea-level conditioning to catch up to the higher altitudes.

I also ran into the nicest people who went out of their way to help me plan & conduct my hunts and take care of my game. It's a wonderful place to hunt, and I wish I could make the trip every year.

Just some thoughts on hunting Wyoming from this non-resident.

Regards, Guy

Is the draw date over with for Moose?? if not, I would consider the Bighorn mountains for a tag possibility, I too was born and raised near Cody and the Bighorns is the place for BIG Moose. Ron Tilley

i have hunted before in area 26 for deer and know the area, but haven't drawn a deer tag in over 5 years. i didn't try for a deer tag there for a couple of years. i started to send for moose preference points when a point costed 7 dollars, now a preference point is 76 dollars. i think to draw a tag in the bighorns is taking about 12 points. i will have 9 this year.in 26 i think i can draw this year but i haven't been out there for about 5 years, that's why i asked about how hard the winter, predator problems, etc. just trying to get a little idea from someone out there. thanks for the replies guys.now all i can do is keep my fingers crossed and hope i get lucky and draw! cliffe

bullwinkle is safe. no tag. thought i had a good chance at drawing, but no luck.9 points now, maybe next year. cliffe
