Wyoming antelope hunt

Drew a 16-1 antelope tag in Wyoming for my first antelope hunt. Plan on hunting the big section of blm land north of I 90. On onxmaps looks like it a little hillier then what I would think is "typical" antelope country. Talked with game warden there he assured me there was hunt able numbers there if we just walk, which I have no problem with. The blm unit looks to be about 15 mile x15 miles. Anyone have any experience and pointers for that area and the use of blm roads. Pretty difficult to read the blm land use rules and know which roads are legally usable.

I have 3 tags for 29 so I will be hunting a ways south of you. I personally prefer to hunt in land with some hills as it suits my spot and stalk style better. PM me if you think I might be of any help on pointers.

Regarding the BLM access, I have always had great success calling or visiting the local BLM office. Folks are very helpful and should be able to answer any questions you might have.

There is ample land to hike, with plenty of goats in those hills. If you haven't got one yet, get the ONX map for your gps or phone. They close off alot of the Methane roads during hunting season. Not sure "who" closes them. --BLM OR METH. Check with the office to see the leagel's of driving on them.

I'll bet you don't have to walk too far. Just got back from my WY prairie dog shoot near Casper.
It would appear to me there are almost as many antelope in WY as there are prairie dogs; and there are a BUNCH of those!

There is a BLM office in Rock Springs, just south of I 80. Don't drive off roads as the game warden's will enforce off road driving. Two tracks are ok unless marked no travel. park within a vehicle length of road. general rules. A lot of roads turn to "snot" when any rain hits, take chains.

I drove through that area recently OTW to Montana and I counted 100 Antelope from Gillette to the Montana border. So I think you will be fine if I saw that many just driving down the road. They were every where.. I really don't think there is a bad area in Wyoming for them.

Here's a tip. I am a native of Wyoming, but on the south west corner. Get a GPS if you don't have one, or load Back Country Navigator app on your phone. Next, for the GPS buy the Wyoming GPS chip for your GPS.. It will overlay the state, BLM, FS and private lands for all of Wyoming. If you use Back Country Navigator it also has a land overlay available. The GPS version also shows hunt area boundaries.. Very handy stuff

In Wyoming it is legal to go off road to recover a downed animal

Here in NE Nevada, the pronghorns may be found surprisingly high in the hills. The last one I was involved with harvesting (my buddie's tag) was a bachelor male taken atop a knob at 6600' elevation, with the adjacent valley floor at 4200'.

Any advice on a good midrange priced gps that will take a Onx gps chip

Carefully research legal road access. Speaking from experience, there are a lot of areas of public land in WY that look promising until you realize there is no legal way to reach them without a helicopter.

I hunt with two other guy's. We all use Garman GPS's and not the same model's, they all seem to work but do have some different options.

I have an eTrex 20 and 30 and both take micro SD cards. But if I was buying one just for your hunt I would buy the GPSMAP 64s. The electronic compass is a nice feature.

Plans next year for an antelope hunt near Rawlins WY. Buddy has a son and daughter living out there. Look forward to it as well

Have you bought any preference points for next year yet. Iam a newbie but have looked at the last couple of years draws, and it looks like point creep is going to make hard to draw a really good unit without several points in the future. Not that I any experience it just appears to be headed that way

No have not. But I understand doe tags are always available if unsuccessful. I just got the offer a week or so ago. Too late to apply at this point. I will apply annually after this year if the offer stays open.
