WTK-Anyone have a short barreled 6XC?

In the process of throwing together some parts I have been accumulating. My new McM Rem Varmint showed up last week so trying to decide on what to build. Have a new Stiller Predator SA for a couple yrs and a 6mm Krieger #5 in 8twist for 4-5yrs just for such a project someday when I could afford a nice stock in the colors I chose. Already have a 6XC and 6x47L with 8 twist tubes @ 26". Also a 6BR in 8 and 14. Also have a 22/244Imp and other smaller 22 caliber. Just too many that will fill the bill but building rifles and tinkering are about all I have anymore to keep somewhat sane!!!!! :(

I have 243, 243AI and 6mm Remington reamers along with the XC etc. I am seriously considering either another XC or a 243AI with a 20 or perhaps 22" barrel and thread it just in case I decide to use a suppressor on it. Seeing as I am disabled with congestive heart failure and also issues with my back etc I can't walk much so really more of a truck gun and something to leave to son or nephew!

So my question is what kind of velocity could I expect from say a 20" 6XC with the 105/107 range of bullet? Thinking I could drop to either an 87Vmax or have a boat load of 85SMK but will be able to go to the heavies if I so desire. Wanna make it sexy with the 'custom' action and the Purdy Mickey McSwirl I got. Colors are majority light gray with equal amounts of med gray and med tan. Only rig I have built with an ordered new Mickey so want to make it somewhat different as I can't afford buying new stocks, just recycled.lol

Any ideas or suggestions? It is finally raining here so a good day to 'ponder' what I want after the 5 month wait for the stock.lol

Thanks.

Respectfully,
Dennis

Dennis,
I have a 20" 6xc in a 14 twist that shoots lights out, also a 30" 6xc 8 twist but the little 20" is fun to shoot, Dave will have a great suggestion for you,..maybe his long Dasher based off a creedmore case ;)

First off I will have to say that Dave Kiff is one of the most pleasant and helpful gents I have ever dealt with!!!! Thank You so much Dave for always offering a pleasant and learning conversation! You should be cloned and your business attitude/ambitions made a part of many customer service companies! ;D A+ has been my experience every time thus far.

I have an XC reamer with .104FB and .274nk and shoot a 26" Rock barrel for my LR yote rig. Have a #5 Krieger in the lathe right now and almost finished with chamber and was having some issues last night so was going to call Dave K today anyhoo. :) My current XC has right at 800rds down it and still shooting super. Was torn between another XC for the future or a 243AI for this setup. Decided to do the XC and probably rechamber the current XC to 243AI which would clean up throat a bit and get another 1K from it???? So was just having a brain F*rt about barrel length as I am limited to mostly truck use anymore. Just curious as to how bad of a velocity drop I would get with a 20-22" tube expecially if I decided to stick with the 105/107 range. Never shot 115's and have no real need to for my purpose.

A few yrs back I had purchased a 6XC reamer from Kenny Dickerson with a .268nk and .050FB so chambered a Douglas #5 12 twist in it @ 26". It shot great and would run a 70TNT @ 3410fps easy. Always looking for a way to screw something else up I sold the reamer to someone on here and recut the Douglas to 6TCU and 20". It is a great shooter and am currently ridding myself of a bunch of 60gr Sierra HP's at about 3100fps.

So just bored and pondering something I don't need again, just want a project. I am yote rifle poor and fewer yotes but still determined to turn prestine pieces of finally crafted stainless into worn out pieces of pipe with an ugly hole in them! lol Kinda like my wanting a faster short range truck gun last fall then my 6XC for running shots etc. and making misses easier to spot with lighter recoil from a lighter bullet, makes sense eh? Not like a bunch of 223's or a couple 222's, a 222mag or a Fireball I have wouldn't work, or the 6TCU, or the 22/250AI or a 243 or a 6x47L, instead my lil brain thought, 'you have a 22/244IMP reamer you bought yrs back. 8)

Of course None of the 11 or 12 barrel blanks I now have are the right contour or twist so I got ahold of Frank G and got a Bartlein in 8.5tw someone backed out on and had him recontour it to .750 muzzle diameter so I could thread it 5/8-24 and have a good shoulder. Wanted to shoot the 75Amax around 3500. The gent I got the reamer from didn't know FB so when I am done and with the design of the 75Amax it wouldn't have mattered but OAL to lands was 2.930" which is way to long for a 700 SA mag box. So I went with the 70VLD. Shoots great butttttt....well I never claimed to be a 'rocket scientist', with the 70VLD at 3660fps with 52.9gr of H4831SC and a lighter rifle recoils worse than the XC with 107's and the durn muzzle blast from that much rocket fuel in a 24" IS NOT any easier to spot misses with!!!!!!!! Sooooo, while part of my plan seemed great, the part I really wanted/needed, that being less recoil with more velocity flat flew out the window! :(

The guys without a lathe are way better off than they realize, that is because while waiting for a smith to do their build they can come to terms with their needs vs wants and not join an action and a blank in the afternoon and then wonder why they did what they did!!! In other words common sense has a better chance when all the necessary components are not at your immediate disposal. LOL

Sorry for the long ramble, a short answer just didn't fit the situation, kinda like needing another yote rifle! :)
