WSM or WSSM ??

Rechambering a barrel for 1k shooting it is a 6.5 need input on WSM vs wssm . This is an IBS 1000 yd rifle. This is second barrel, have a 300 WHBY as primary. Thanks JVON

I dont know why you could'nt do a 6.5 WSM.That would be a riot.

The 6.5WSSM is comparative to a 260AI (same capacity & loads).
IMO the perfect capacity for 140gr bullets in this cal.

Lots of guys built a 6.5 WSM and tried them at Williamsport and they could not get them to shoot. One guy after shortening it 3 times finally got it to shoot half decent. If I was to build a 6.5 for 1000 yard I would research it a lot before doing it. I built 3 different ones and they weren't worth the time or money. If I was going to another 6.5, it would probably be a 6.5x47. I'll stick to a Dasher and a 300 WSM because they are just easier to get to shoot and stay there. Those two hold about every record in 1000 yard BR. There is good reason for that if you ever loaded and shot them. Good brass for both, and a case full of powder are two of the many reasons they shoot good. Matt

My problem is I only have a bolt for a magnum bolt face, don't have $500.00 to put out for another bolt right now. The barrel I have is a6.8x284 but only got 1 bolt with gun. I am too old to do any traveling or serious shooting. Just some local stuff, more 600 than 1000 even though ,I have a 600 &1000 yd practice range

I could provide a reamer print for my 26wssm.

Something that may matter to you up front is that WSSM necks must be turned.
WSSM cases are cut down WSM cases, so we get WSM body thickness in WSSM necks(~19-21 thou). I turned mine down to 13 thou, which has allowed lower ES.
My current load is 47.4gr IMR4350/139LAP/3025fps @ 28" barrel. This is under SAAMI max, and I have never needed to FL size cases, so it could be pushed a lot harder.

I'm happy with it completely. But a 260AI would be easier.

I have 3 6.5 WSMs and they are sweet. I also have 2 6.5 wssm and they too are great and scary accurate. The two are in a very different speed league but both so great with the 140s. My wsm xp handguns will shoot with any of my regular long range rifles in both accuracy and pretty much speed as well

Sorry I pad is acting up this is what I meant to reply in response to the last quote

Btw my wssm s are both setup as 25wssm brass necked up with a no turn barrel. If its a bench gun you may want to go another way but bith of mine are tactical/varmint guns in the wssm set up this way and are insanely accurate. Sub half moa without any of the extra work. I am sure I could get a bit more out of them if I had to but for my purposes this was more than enough.

I just necked up with a turning mandrel for a 6.5 and loaded for .002 neck tension for the first firing then planned to play with neck tension later but never had to. Of my 12 or so 6.5s these may be the most accurate for some reason.
That said I do agree that there are easier ways to achieve the same thing in a round that will feed a bit better if you are looking for a repeater though it doesnt seem like thats something youre doing.
