Wounded Warrior Project - Anti Gun?

Wounded Warrior Project Email Exchange
by Gun Talk on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 10:56am ·

After Sunday's show, we've gotten many emails about Tom's remarks after WWP declined an interview request on Gun Talk Radio because it's a firearms-related show. We've also seen the forums that are suggesting many things that are not true. So, I'm going to lay it all out right here.

We thought it would be great to book the WWP on the Veteran's Day show to promote the organization, so I contacted them. I was flabbergasted when their PR contact, Leslie, sent me an email saying they could not participate because our show dealt with firearms. Knowing that WWP has had a booth at trade shows and various gun shows across the US, takes wounded warriors on hunts and range days, raffles guns and accessories as fundraisers, etc., their policy didn't make much sense. I forwarded the email on to Tom to get his take.

The following is the complete email exchange:

Hello, Leslie:

Sarah forwarded me your email after I asked her to invite the Wounded Warriors Project to join me on "Tom Gresham's Gun Talk" radio show.

I'm stunned at your email saying that the WWP doesn't participate in an interview or activity related to firearms. Inasmuch as there are 90 million gun owners and most of them support wounded veterans, I think they would be shocked to hear that they are, by way of their hobbies, somehow not worthy of helping with the Wounded Warriors Project.

Does your policy apply also to police agencies and the military, since they are "related to firearms?"

I'm hoping that we have misunderstood your email. Can you confirm that it is, in fact, an official policy of the Wounded Warriors Project to not do interviews with or participate in any activity related to firearms?

Thank you.

Tom Gresham

Good afternoon --

While we appreciate your interest in Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) you are correct that we decline the media opportunity.

Please note the following notice that appears on our website which also applies to WWP public awareness policy and inquiries from media outlets:

http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/additional-opportunities.aspx

WWP does not co-brand, create cause marketing campaigns or receive a percentage or a portion of proceeds from companies in which the product or message is sexual, political or religious in nature, or from alcohol or firearms companies.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Thanks for confirming that, Leslie. It was a simple opportunity to promote the WWP on a national program in an effort to send donations your way.

I'll pass along the info that you don't want or need the help of America's gun owners.

Best regards,

Tom Gresham

Good morning --

This policy is not a judgment on those who own and use firearms – clearly every member of our armed forces has been trained in the use of firearms and then called on to use them in the course of their service to this country.

Our position regarding firearms and alcohol is in response to the struggles that many injured service members face with substance abuse and suicide and the roles those items often play in those issues.

Thank you.

Hello, Leslie:

Thank you for that explanation.

I do think -- and I'm being as kind as possible -- that it's the nuttiest thing I've heard in years. Suicides are not linked to firearms. Japan has a much higher rate of suicide than does the U.S., and they have essentially no firearms. Suicide is a serious issue irrespective of the methodology used.

This explanation doesn't pass even the most simple "does this make sense" test.

Your policy does, in fact, brand firearms and the companies which make them as undesirables, and by association, you are saying that those who own and use firearms for recreation, hunting, self protection, and other safe and legal uses are to be avoided.

It's certainly your option to ostracize the firearms industry, the 90 million gun owners in America, and the media which support firearms safety training.

At this point, I feel an obligation to make sure the millions who listen to my radio show and watch my two national television series know about your policy.

I cannot fully express how much I feel you are doing a disservice to our wounded veterans, and how disappointed I am to discover this bias at the Wounded Warriors Project.

Sincerely,

Tom Gresham

Official: Thunder Ranch will no longer be doing any fundraising for Wounded Warrior. This due to the main reason is they will do not want support from the guns period because guns are used by our military to kill themselves. What do they save themselves with? Nerf guns? Also the fact that very little of our money is actually getting to the families that need them. We will find charities in the coming months to help us all give but for now all money raised with our current DVD sale will go to our Seal team family... the Reece Petersen Trust fund. Thank you as always for your support. We will continue to do the best job we can to put as much money as we can to helping our military. Clint and Heidi

Another fine example of some greedy person who saw an opportunity to cash in using the typical corperate greed strategy to pad their personal finances before even helping One Vet. I cant stress how disgusting I find this.

I"m sure WWP will take their money...

I was severely wounded in Iraq, and I'm a "Wounded Warrior Alumni"and have only received phone calls, e-mails, and small trinkets....

Asked many times about hunting trips, have been told "sure thing" but in four years of asking I have never been invited on one trip. I have to use a wheelchair for hunting and require an attendant to travel with me, so I need a little financial assistance or someone to help find outfitters that can take disabled hunters, and/or reduce fees.

The WWP intake to pay out ratio for the year, not counting the surplus, looks real low. I wonder why they had a surplus? I was a delegate for a WWP conference in Tampa this year and it was canceled for claimed budget reasons..

I'm sure there are examples of good WWP work..

I am both astounded and disgusted at this policy; there are a number of other charities besides the WWP that support wounded veterans and I will seek them out rather than support the WWP.

Absolutely DISGUSTED W/ Wounded Warrior. Cancelled my monthly donation. INSTEAD I will donate to AmericanSnipers.org. Enough of this "politically correct' nonsense.

This is an example of why this type of forum is needed. Hooligans such as this get exposed. Now they will problably respond with it was all a mistake and please keep sending money. Good for you for showing us the way they really feel. ED K

Nope the prior contact (Sam ???) sent the original MSG. That was almost 2 yrs ago. In that time NOTHING has improved so donate to those who care for those who serve.

I am neither outfitter nor guide, I am more than willing to help any wounded soldier plan a black bear hunt for Southeast Alaska, and if needed go along and "play" guide. I would have to really do some research for wheelchair bound soldiers, but I might be able to figure something out. I am not well heeled, but can and will donate time and gear. Glenninjuneau@gmail.com

I find it interesting that just last month Craig Bodington did a hunt for WWP and scored 4 elk with wounded warriors, just saying.

lets not kid ourselves!many "non-profit" organization have great salaries, benefits for board members.nothing about this makes sense unless they are being funded or founded by our very distant brothers on the left !!!!!!

I just checked their website and seen two links touting the hunting projects just this year. Sorry, that alone throws suspicion on this thread.

I've sent Mr Gresham an invitation to comment on this story, we'll see if he responds

Here's copy of my email exchange with Mr Tom Gresham & Sarah at Gun Talk media;

Hi Tom,
My name is Gary Eliseo, I'm deeply involved with the long range competitive shooting world, I'm writing about a story circulating around the internet about the Wounded Warrior Project, I'm sure you've seen it, the story cites an email exchange between you and the PR director of WWP where she clearly has problems being involved with the firearms owning community, there's a thread over on accurate shooter going on this subject and I would like to invite you to comment on weather this story is accurate or not.

Thanks for your time
Gary Eliseo

Thanks, Gary!
I've sent it on to Tom. The WWP stance, and our emails, are all true.
I see someone questioning the validity bc WWP sponsors hunts, etc. That's where the confusion comes in!!
They wouldn't come on the show bc we are firearms-related, but actively participate in range days, hunts, etc.

Thank You,
Sarah, Gun Talk Media

Hi, Gary:

Looks like others have weighed in on this on the forum. It's true, unfortunately.

I'm hoping we can get Wounded Warriors Project to change its policy regarding guns and gun companies. It's a worthwhile group that should be supported. I just can't lend support to any outfit which wants to put gun owners in the same box as Larry Flynt.

Best,

Tom

Just to be clear:

There are WWP hunts, at least I have seen them on TV. I don't know if WWP arranged them or if the outfitter did.

I just stated my experience with WWP: Have been in the program for 8 years and never had the WWP arrange a hunt for me, nor have they even hooked me up with an outfitter. In the past 4 years I have asked many times about possible hunts, and have had none.

There have been over 60,000 wounded in OIF/OEF and I'm not sure how many more qualify as WW with PTSD.

I sure don't understand the overhead costs, or why program would carry a surplus from one year to the next...if you don't count the surplus, the program has an overhead of 70% or more.

A trailor full of wounded warriors was hit by a train in texas and all are deceased. This came in just now on fox news.My heart goes out to the families for their loss of such fine people. Fox just chaged the report to 4 dead and 10 severly critical. They(ww) were in a parade when the train hit them. It was sponsered by hunt for heroes. Now it is 4 dead and 17 wounded.
