Right here is my latest plan for a new rifle,I cant wait to get back to work I have way to much time to think when I am off)
Pick one of these up for about £500 in .204 ruger SPS
sps
looks like a good base for customising
Stick one of these varmint stocks on it in olive which i can get for about £350
wild dog
wild dog
these come with pillars already installed and an ammo box hidden in the cheek piece
Wire in this trigger which I can get for £200
trigger
nice trigger
this trigger looks very good, it comes with 2 different shaped blades + the full saftey catch arrangment and full range of adjusment including blade position.
get some burris rings on it and my swarovski scope and go play.
In my local gun shop The vssf II is costing me £950 while this is costing me £1050 and I am getting a new trigger, which I would buy for the vssf II anyway) and spare stock from the deal which I can sell for a few pounds. Also the wild dog stock comes with pillars already installed, I know the vssf comes with hs precision stock and has an alloy block but I really like these wild dog stocks and have heard very good things about and would probably buy one at some point. The thing that puts me off the VSSF II is the stainless finish, while it looks amazing I do hunt under moonlight and in general sunlight I think it would glint very badly, also the stainless finish seems to show up alot of imperfections in the finish, unless its just the particular one I have looked at. There only three things I am wondering about with regards doing this
1. Are all remmy actions built to the same tolerances and standard regardless of wether they are top or bottom of the line, I know some of the cheaper ones dont have the jewlled bolt is this the only difference?
2. The sps only has the 24inch barrel it seems people are getting the best from the .204 with a 26inch barrel, though I will be using a moderator of about 6 inches long so this probably will compensate.
3. The barrel contour on the sps, will it be similar to that of a varmint barrel as the channel cut in the stock is for a varmint barrel, not worried if there is too much room more if there is not enough), I have never seem an sps before so I dont know what sort of barrel they have.
As always any advice greatly appreciated.
