World F Class Championship Warm up Match 8-11-2013

For over fifty years it has been widely accepted that once the summer heat came to the valley of the sun, all activity ceased on the Ben Avery Shooting Facilities high power rifle range. In recent history, with the overhead covers at neighboring clubs, PRGC and Rio Salado, the shooting naturally migrated there as a way to beat the burning temperatures seen here in the desert southwest. I’m glad to say that this has now changed. Thanks to a dedicated cadre of shooters who came together this past May and helped launch the Made in the Shade series of 1000 yard practice matches. From the donated portable shelters provided by Oliver, Mike Kelley and Heather Spring to the handmade stakes and store bought tie downs built and bought by Mike Dalton and Norm Darnell we are able to comfortably shoot all summer long on what is arguably one of the best 1000 yard ranges in the country.

This past Sunday, in light of several members of our club going to the World F Class Championships in Raton New Mexico, we decided to have a “Warm-up” match featuring the Worlds Day one course of fire; complete with convertible sighters. We even had a bit of an international flavor as Nik Chiew, in transit from New Zealand stopped in on his way to Raton to get in a little last minute practice.

The targets for the F class shooters were the 5V international targets so as to give them a view of what was to come. The sling shooters who joined us shot on our standard 10X decimal target. All in all I think a good solid training session was had by all and I can only hope that the time invested has made our "bunch" just that much more competitive! Good luck to all in your pursuit of perfection.

I put together a few pictures of the day and can be viewed by clicking the link below. http://s1360.photobucket.com/user/Chelebell3/media/World%20Championship%20Practice/WorldChampionshipsWarmupAugust2013_zpsb1aee2d4.mp4.html

Hey Rick>>> Nice Video!! I live in Texas, however, my daughter and son live in Chandler. Last year I took my son to the Rio Salado range, it was incredible! The facilities are the best I have ever seen. They "run" it like someone might guess would be run at bootcamp in the military! It is probably the safest range I have been to because of that. I wonder though, I would find it difficult to set up a chronograph there, but I may be wrong.. At any rate, if Ben Avery is anything like Rio Salado it should be one of, if not the best range in the country! I am seriously considering going to the nationals there next year..I believe it is there the next 2 years, correct?

Ben, [br]
Ben Avery is an outstanding facility. Except for Rick, everybody there is really nice and helpful. ;) [br]
By all means, travel to Phoenix next year. It's a big town and there are lots of choices. I shoot there several times each year and it is always a professional and enjoyable event. (and Rick is a big part of making it that way)

Well Steve, I am seriously considering it.. I can make the nationals in conjunction with visiting my kiddos! I have 2 friends that would like to go also>>> We could stay at my daughters, I believe it is about 1.25hrs to the Ben Avery range from her house.. I would love to see some of the people from the 6mmBR forum and put faces with names. Most everybody on the forum seem to be excellent people..

Ben,

The F Nats timeframe next year, and the year after is nearly perfect weatherwise. Typically we see daytime temps in the mid 80's with mornings starting off very comfortably in the upper 60s to the low 70s.
Right now e are having an incredibly cool summer and in particular a very cool August. Morning coffee on the veranda at 5am see's the thermometer reading in the 70's! That's why we didn't even put the shades up at 800 and 900 Sunday, we just didn't need them.

I have only participated in the prone 500 yard events at Rio so I am assuming they model Ben Avery on the public ranges. Strictly regimented firing and cease-firing times. Chronos can be used but sometimes it takes a cycle or two to set it up. Many times, throughout the year, the Desert Sharpshooters has a small range area reserved for just that type of testing but it is not an everyday thing.

In my nearly 40 years of competitive shooting I have shot on nearly two dozen ranges all around the country and Ben Avery is right up there with the best of them. I will say that if you are used to shooting on grass you might think we had some kind of nuclear accident as our range is almost completely devoid of any vegetation but is an honest range that is well flagged for the matches.

You may already know this but at the below link is our calendar for just about all shooting in the southwest. http://desertsharpshooters.com/content/

Let me know if you are coming so we can roll out the welcome sand mat!

I certainly appreciate it Rick! I think there is at least a 60+pct chance of going next year! I look forward to meeting you and all the other "6mmBR" contestants! I know about the gravel and all of the "desert amenities"!! LOL!! I think it would be a GREAT time! Let's see what happens betwixt now and then... I certainly appreciate your kind invite..

Rick, thank you for the opportunity to shooting with a bunch of nice guys! Thanks, Matt for the invite and help with pulling the targets and scoring, last but not least, thank you, Allan for sorting out my reloading component shortage. I apologize for not remembering all the names but, thanks guys!

Ben Avery not only has good facility, the staffs, the people that I met were all very friendly and helpful. I felt like a homeless child being adopted and accepted with open arms!

All the best in your future endeavor.

Nik

Nice Video Rick., and thank you for the practice sessions.

Nik, thanks for finding my keys. lol

I think the Nationals are to be in Phoenix the next two years.
Both are great places to test your skills.
