Wolf Primers

Ok, so I just got my first 6br and I have been reading up on primers and I have been using the Wolf sr 223s. My es is kinda high and I feel like I can't run near as hot as you guys. Do you think that I would be better off Wolf sr Magnums(not the 223m)?

You should like the Wolf small rifle mag primers. We are getting good results with them The mag has a harder cup . Just make sure to crush seat them in the cases.

I have been using the Wolf SR Mag primers with excellent results. The standard Wolf SR is too soft and will blank on you.

Strongly suggest that you use an .062 firing pin dia. as that will make using competition loads levels easy on your primers.

The Wolf (PMC/Tula/Murom) SR primers come in three 'grades': KVB-223 (cups on the softer side of what we generally prefer); KVB-223REM (sometimes described as just KVB-223M), same charge weight and compound (as the KVB-223 BUT) with a magnum-strength cup; KVB-556M, a true magnum small rifle primer.

All the "Russian" primers (small and large) are a teensy bit larger in diameter than other available brands, and need a firm hand when seating to avoid problems later on. That same attribute tends to help them extend functional brass life when other primers won't stay put.

A friend had piercing issues this past Monday in Lapua Palma cases loaded with KVB-223's. I've had similar troubles in 6.5 Grendel and .223. Switching to the KVB-223(RE)M solved those, they work great with my Palma loads and in Lapua's AA 6.5 Grendel brass in my 6RAT spacegun.

IMHO the KVB-223M is the ticket to success for most competition cartridges using a SR primer. I don't think a true magnum primer is necessary in a 6BR-size case (the 6RAT's pretty close) and may only serve to move your ES in the wrong direction.

Just for the record, what propellant, charge weight range, and bullet are you working with that's not giving you the results you believe you should be seeing?

107 SMK, 32.5 gr of Rl17. I know Rl17 isn't a great choice in powder but I get good accuracy and speed.

Have you noticed the price increase lately on the Wolf/Tula brands. Started out in the 16$ range now their in the $24-26 range. interesting ;)

Before I posted my comment yesterday, I visited Primer Valley Inc. to check their primer descriptions. They show Tula SR @ $20/1000, Wolf SR @ $15.50/1000. Been that way since maybe February this year, or earlier. Only the Wolf 223 are out of stock currently in the SR category.

My point of reference is the LR Mag primers, which are what I use. I should have clarified that. BUT they're STILL CHEAPER than Fed 215 GM's and are as/more consistant ES/SD wise.

Can anyone substantiate this i have heard this several time but have not seen any measurements to confirm. I am currently working with CCI BR2s and notice my brass is not holding them as securely as i would like, if changing to Wolf Primers would get me a tigheter fit i would prefer to change to them.

Thanks
Trevor

Does anyone has hands on experience with this as far as ES goes? Anyone has any good experience with the true magnum small primers? I am going to order some and like to get it right, if possible. Thanks.

I always used CCI 450 SRMs in my 6mmBR with N540 but used the BR-4 with Varget. The N540 gave better ES/SD with the 450s and vertical at long range was also better.

Some very worthwhile data can be found here:

http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/p/articles-index.html

- under the heading Primers well down the page.

That being said (and being always willing to prove myself wrong in the quest for dependable data) I measured 10 sample SR primers this morning out of the selection I have on hand.

This was done using a blade-type digital micrometer, I admit to not rotating each primer (in the interest of time spent) to measure across two diameters so as to be able to averaging them.

All but the Wolf are at least five years old (or more) hence may not accurately reflect what more recent product would measure.

What I found:

CCI BR4 (Lot A07J) high 0.17370", low 0.17335", avg. dia. 017357", sd 0.00012;

Remington 7-1/2 (Lot 224) high 0.17405", low 0.17360", avg. dia. 0.17378", sd 0.00014";

Winchester SR (Lot RLG045G) high 0.17410", low 0.17380", avg. dia. 017392", sd 0.00011";

Wolf SR KVB223REM (Lot 3-10) high 0.17405", low 0.17375", avg. 0.17396", sd 0.00015";

CCI 450 SRM (Lot K-06K) high 0.17425", low 0.17370", avg. 0.17402" sd 0.00020";

Fed 205M (Lot 0999F02) high 0.17445", low 0.17380", avg. dia. 0.17410", sd 0.00020"

Murom (Russian) KVB-223 (Lot 1-01) high 0.17420", low 0.17395", avg. 0.17418", sd 0.00011";

As much for price and availability as performance over my chronometer and on targets, I use the Wolf product over others (the BR4's have proven to be most comparable) in my rifles.

The cup O.D. is going to be very close among brands. Look at the cup thickness according to the chart. Access with link below. Chart does not include Wolf though. You may have seen this already but just in case you didn't.
