Wolf primers?

I bought some large rifle wolf primers and was trying them out over the past two weeks. I have been very impressed with the groups and SD on velocity. But then the fly in the ink. I had two rounds fail to fire in my 30X47 HBR. The primers were seated correctly and were not touched by my hands at all during seating and I tried a second snap on both and they failed to fire. I pulled down the loads and took the anvil out of one of the primers to see if it had priming in the cup. It did and it was full. The other primer I laid on the cement floor of my loading room and hit it with a hammer and it went BANG. I wish I would have thought to add my ear muffs to the safety glasses I put on.

Have you all had any fail to fire issues with Wolf Primers?

I have been loading for over 30 years and this is the first time I have ever had a primer not fire for me. I have held off on the Wolf primers for my deer hunting ammo and went with CCI-BR's . I would hate to have the buck of the a lifetime walk out and have a SNAP.

I have shot 50 rounds of 223 with the Wolf Mag small rifle primers in my AR-15 without any problems.

I have shot a couple hundred of the LR and LRM Wolf primers without a problem. I have read that weak/underpowered springs or users of lightweight firing pins have had issues with some not firing. I too have noticed some very consistent performance with the Wolf primers.

Yes I too was very impressed with them in both my .308 Win and .223 Rem. F-Class loads....UNTILL a puncture with my tried and true .223 load in a Match, not 1 but 4 of 50 rounds,,from a knew Lot of 5000) with 1 being the worst case as it blew a small piece back into the lugs and locked the bolt up. I recovered with help, a hammer and rag and still got out of that string with a 150-9X.
I have done the same on pulling all my ammo loaded with them and gone back to Fed Match as I don't want a repeat of that ever.

Seems like "every one" has had problems with primers.
Wolf, Federal, CCI, take your pick. I use CCI and have had problems with FTF! Can't pin it down to a batch #. It just happens. 3 out of 50 loaded rounds. Pull them down, press out the primers and get a real good look at them. One will look burned and another looks like new. All seated the same. One will "pop" with a hammer and the another is a dud.
I've gone as far as to use CCI "Mil Mpec" primers, thinking the harder cup might keep from being pierced. Some FTF. Some take 2 or 3 strikes to go off? Another group has no problems.
My shooting buddy uses nothing but CCI BRs and has never had a FTF. Wolf primers are on the list to "use".
When you find the answer, let us know. ;)

2506, what primer tool are you using? are you using a primer pocket uniformer? I was about to buy 10 K of the small rifle mag.but.now ???????....jim

I use a primer pocket uniformer and I use a Lee hand primer. Most of what I can find is that it seems to be the LR Wolf and small pistol primers that people are having trouble with FTF. I would go ahead and get the primers if you are not going to be doing serious shooting like big game or trophy hunting or in a match where you do not have time for a re-shoot. Get the Mag small rifle primers the standard are too soft for much pressure. The Mag primers are supposed to have the same mix but have a thicker cup. They really shoot tight groups.

I've been using the small rifle mag primers, both white box and the wolf for 4 years now in my 6br's and never had a FTF with over 5000 hit's...........
I've been using the large rifle mag's for a few months now and still no FTF's with them either...

thanks guys, that good to hear,i read in some older post that you couldn't seat them good with a lee tool......jim

I have gone thru about 3000 of the new Wolf LR primers and have had no FTF problems with them.

With the old KVR Russian primers that were imported five years or so ago, I have had a couple that I had to hit twice but they did fire.

I do uniform my primer pockets and use an older Lee priming tool that allows you to adjust the seating depth. Primers are typically seated to feel enough resistance where the center of the primer cup flattens just a little.
