Winnings?

Im in the middle of building rifle to be doing some 600 and hopefully 1000 yard competitions with, but three weeks ago i shot just with some local guys that get together in the massive amounts of snow and cold to shoot. I was on the winning team and got $20 bucks, well that made me pretty happy because it was the first time i ever shot against people, and i wasnt even thinking about winnings.

But it got me thinking even at the entry level, and beyond, what are people competing for. Im sure it veries from place to place and the amount of people shooting but just some general ideas of whats out there to win when i compete. Thanks.

Rock Knocker: At the clubs where I shoot the benchrest groundhog matches, the club takes 50% and 50% gets paid out in winnings. Cost of targets and other material comes out of the club share.

Cool. I guess theres always something to win. Trophies, bragging rights,....... cash. I will be brand new to this once the season for it starts but i plan on haveing some practice. Im excited to start and learn some stuff.

Oh wait, what about the women? Any groupies waiting around to follow the winner home? ;D :P

For regular 1000 yd BR it is BRAGGING RIGHTS and a piece of paper.

Win the nationals and you get first pass at the prize table, some wood, and MAJOR BRAGGING RIGHTS!!!!

And that is just fine with me.

Certainly not like it is with the NFL or NBA players.

When I've ended up "in the money" I welcome the offset buying gas to get to the range that day.

Getting home again has ALWAYS come out of my pocket....

I'm working a big sponsorship contract with Nike and General Motors now that Tiger Woods is out. :D

What's that sound? Oh no, the alarm clock again.... back to the real job...

Well, if you win the Nationals at Perry, ther are some cash prizes and awards tha got with that. If you're really lucky, they may cover the primers it took to get you there . . . but I wouldn't count on it.

You want to win prizes and cash, then you need to check into the USPSA scene. Personally, I think that's what has ruined that game, and why I don't mess with it any longer.

Forget about it! If there are any women at the match, they'll be the one's finishing in the top spots anyway. Trust me on this. If there's a young Army E-5 named Sherri on the range, just save the time and go home.

Oh well my girlfriend wouldnt like me bringing groupies home anyways :-\

Im exceted just to get my new rifle out and find some great loads for it, i will worry about all the trophies later.

From my perspective on this I guess it is what your definition of "winnings" is.

My factory rilfe has paid for itself several times over, my custom rifle has about 20% paid for itself. But I've got a half an inch of paper "atta-boys" and a few trophies. All this over the course of the last 7 years.

Usually if you can cover lunch or part of your gas to the match you've done pretty well.

What I consider winnings are all the great people that I meet and new friends made at the matches. A LOT of really nice folks attend the matches that I compete in..... so I guess that is what makes it all worthwhile to me. :) WD

Yep, + 1 on that!

German S and WyleWD have the BEST perspective on this, and it's refreshing to see. Compete for the compitition, the PAYOFF is ALL the NEW/OLD FRIENDS you get to see

I didnt mean to sound greedy in any way by asking the question, i was just wondering whats out there.

The $20 i said i won before was after i paid $30 to shoot... but hell i still won the $20 and had a great time.

Ive been thinking about competing in long range shooting for years and im just finnaly collecting enough money and resources for it to be possible. In all those years i never thought of there being something physical or financal to take out of it, but inevitably there is something to compete for.

True, but where the problem is, our belly shooting is not a spectator sport. Watching or even calling the match is not much fun, right up there with watching paint dry.

On the Wednesday shooting shows all you see is run and gun, there is something to watch as steel falls and the holes in the cardboard appear.

No one cares to watch us lay there and make noise. So, no TV, or anything that would bring advertisers money. All we can hope for is some prizes by the shooter's supply (like Lapua, Kevin) and I sure appreciate the support.
