windflags

what should i look for in purchasing windflags? are the daisy wheels essential? in the few matches i've been in i don't seem to get much information from a daisy wheel, but mostly from the flag itself, have been sharing flags with a friend). is it enough to just have a ball? what other features to look for? what brands seem to be the best? how many do i need? plan to be shooting at 100/200 yards. thanks.

I am looking into getting some wind flags myself so I have been reading up on them a bit.

In Mike Ratigan's book he talks about the different types. Basically it seems as though the daisy wheel is not essential because it does not respond to a "pickup" fast enough and can often continue to coast after a condition has died out. More or less they are a little slow to respond on a day with switching winds.

He speaks of daisy wheel, single vane, and double vane, but it pretty much looks like personal opinion will be your best bet. It does say that a double vane flag will be the best indicator at angling conditions.

Different colors on each side would be good for indicating direction in an angling head or tail wind.

The best way to go seems to be getting flags like the majority of the other guys at your range so you will be used to the reaction of that type of flag. Its seems like allot of people watch the flags of others that are upwind more than they watch there own so they know what condition is coming before it gets to them.

I know I'm all over the place on this but I'm trying to make a decision as well so I'm sharing what I have read so far.

Talk to the guys who make them they will set you up with the right setup for what your needs are. This is where is bought mine. dkkeeney@sbcglobal.net

These are well liked by a number of very good shooters. I have examined them and found the workmanship superb. I would go for the larger vane and the ball.

I made my own for now from cloraplast. I dont think I spelled that right but it is the plastic used for political signs. I used the basic design that Mike Ratigan talks about in his book. As I gain more experience I will probably buy some. Using my home made flags shooting my 22 at 100 yds I found that I have been just wasting ammo when not using wind flags.

dunraven: If you want the best, most responsive wind flags, used by some of the better benchrest shooters in the country today, at a very reasonable price, I recommend Rick Graham's fags with sail tails. Also, don't forget to ask him about his larger flags for the back end of 200 yards. I have five. Three regular and two large and wouldn't trade them for anything. Here is Rick's site: http://www.brflags.com/

I just got notification last night that my Carbon River windflags were shipping out today. I got dual vane with ball type. Can't wait to use them.
