Wind speed/direction device

I saw a small wind meter/wind direction device at a match last year. The guy said he got it at a sail boat shop, but after hours of web searching, I've come up empty. This is a fairly small device that has three wind cups that spin faster as the wind speed picks up. It also has a "sail" or tail that keeps the nose pointed in the direction that the wind is coming from. Can someone help me out and steer me in the right direction as to where to buy this item? I have a Kestrel, but the unit I described simply sits on a small tripod or possibly just sticks into the ground. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Lloyd

I have a Windtronic hand held wind meter, it has helped me read the wind better and works well, this model might be the one you're looking for as it's sold in wind/kite surfing stores.

Kestrel also make them.

Many years ago I made a wind speed indicator using a 555 CMOS, a reed switch and the packaging from four "Lleggs" panty hose cups.

I've tried to find the circuit schematic with Google searches - to no avail. I was a simple circuit powered by (I believe) a 9 volt battery. I'll keep looking. Perhaps someone else on the forum can help us find the file.

Snowman911,
You are on to the right idea. The device I saw has the wind cups and wind vane, just no electronics. It didn't give you speed, or degrees off of nautical North, it just pointed directly into the wind, and the spinning wind cups gave you a reference to the speed. The guy that had it was shooting/coaching next to my team during the team matches and I was doing all the coaching, so I had plenty of time to observe it work. I have to tell you, this little device saved some points when used in conjunction with other known wind indicators. The model from Peet that Straight Pipes recommended is also very similar but again has electronics that need to be dealt with. Thanks for those that responded, but I'm still looking,
Lloyd

Thanks, Martin. It's the one I'm looking for.
