Wind reading and Magnification question

Hello
I'm curious how you guys set your scopes when watching conditions during shooting.

For Fclass or BR type practice I'm using NF 15-55 and for precise aiming I prefer it all the way up...but it seems much harder to see conditions for me. I can't see the grass or trees and flags don't fit in the picture very well zoomed in so far.

At 25x I can see most of what I need but my aiming does seem to suffer.

Any advice is appreciated!

Learn to shoot both eyes open......the off eye monitoring the field for conditions.

I have a damaged off eye so can't really do that. I try watching the mirage on the edge of the target, but as of now I do better seeing the flags.

^^^ +1. Watch the wind flags with your left eye (if you're right eye dominant).

Also, your reticle markings are accurate at 40x on that scope, and mirage won't be as much of an issue at 40x. Back it down to 40, and watch what the wind is doing to the mirage.

First and foremost I'd like to say that the NF Comp scopes are wonderful. That being said, I always leave mine set at the mark around 40x( or 42x, can't remember for sure) unless the mirage warrants lower power. My reasoning is that the reticle subtends at that power and at a glance I can hold off without turning knobs. It makes life simpler, as that was what the f class reticle was designed for, at least to my understanding. JMHO,

Darrell

So basically I should back out a little and try to get a little bigger view as well as watching the Mirage on the edges of the target?

After reading thru the replies it appears folks are talking about using the scope on the rifle to read the mirage. You can do that but you may have to compromise somewhat. It may be more than most want to deal with but the optimum is a lower power spotting scope focused about half way to the target for reading mirage in addition to the scope on the rifle which will probably be higher power and focused on the target.

+1. Set up your spotting scope so you can come off your cheek weld slightly and see mirage with your non dominant eye while waiting for your score to come up. Focus your spotting scope so mirage is seen best at about half to two thirds of the way to your target. If you need to see wind flags you may need to come off the rifle even more depending on your particular range. The sooner you can visualize mirage after you break your shot the more time you have to judge any sight change needed based on your score, mirage change, or same mirage condition. If you can fire as many shots as possible in a steady wind condition verified by checking mirage after each shot your ability to hold correctly on the target and correct breaking of the shot should result in lots of 10's and X's, assuming a good load. Now if only I could do that I could be a High Master too. NOT!
