Winchester XPR

Trying to get this thing to shoot with factory ammo
It’s a friends gun and he doesn’t want to handload , so I’m working with what he’s gave me
It’s a 6.8 western and ammo is Winchester copper impact 162gr and Browning long range pro 175gr
Originally I couldn’t get anything under 2”
So I removed the scope and retorqued every thing to spec
Then did the 40” pounds on the action screws that Winchester recommends
Went back to the bench and using cold shots the first two 175’s shot three inches apart and I stopped right there
Went to the 162’s and got a dead center group of 1.4” , cold shots .
Scope is luepold VX5 HD
I told him.what I got and recommended he either try some other ammo or handload , so he says there is another factory load he can get and will do so .
Personally I figure 1.4” not to bad for factory ammo , nothing great , but nothing unusual either .
So my question is anyone else here familiar with the XPR ?
And if so , how’s yours doing ?
Thanks , Kenneth

Ahh, the XPR. Great ergonomics, metalwork (for the price point), action and trigger feel. Pretty lackluster performance @ the range.

They ought to readily and repeatedly print at least 1” groups with quality handloads.

But they don’t. I’m disappointed in the one I tried, even at the $350 brand new price.

Sounds like my step dad. He buys the cheapest rifle and scope combo he can find and thinks it will shoot like my f class rifle.

The obvious answer at this point is bed it and float the barrel. Second option I would try, back of the rear screw to 30. Third option after doing the first two, play with a little pressure under the barrel at the fore end. I have seen some cheapies that shot very well with a little attention. I don't know what bullet weights are available but I would be looking for something in 130 to 140 to try also.

No F Class performance expectations here, though I did hope for Remington 783 or Savage Axis performance and that certainly hasn’t been the case.
