Winchester Model 70

Just purchased my first ever model 70. It's a 2006 super grade in 30/06. I don't know what the opinions are regarding these newer model 70's, but I'm very impressed with the fit and finish and the quality of the timber. The functionally of the action is second to none along with the winged safety and trigger I'm very happy.

Winchester Model 70s were and are great rifles. l have had quite a few varmint models over the years... Beginning with an early 243W heavy varmint. Twas my very FIRST varmint rifle almost 30yrs ago.. Had several of the Heavy Varmints with MacMillen stocks and stainless barrel. A 220 Swift was my favourite. My Coyote in 223 saw more use than any of the others. lt went with me to Wyoming, South Dakota, and Texas Panhandle. l gifted it to a very close friend some years back. Since then he has killed quite a few deer with it. The 223 Coyotes seem to be able to shoot HEAVY bullets too. Unlike Remington 223 VLS guns, l believe those Winchester HV 223s had a 1 in 9 twist barrel. That Coyote along with my friend will be making a trip to the Texas Panhandle with me this coming June to shoot some PRAIRIE DOGS. His FIRST time, but not that Coyote's. After suffering and recovering from a stroke this past year he has decided its time to experience the FINER MOMENTS of life...

Have a couple and have always liked them. They are hunting rifles, but I am very pleased with how they shoot and function. The old line about airplanes; "if it looks right, it will fly right", has by me been applied to rifles. Model 70's have always filled the bill, for me.

I've had a lot of them over the years, most were pre '64s. Only one Super Grade, it was a .270 made in 1957, the downer was it had a Griffen&Howe side mount on it. One of my favorites was a Heavy barrel gun in 30:06 that was a real shooter. I've never had a bad one and in the old days they were competitive in pretty much all disiplines.

I searched for many years for this one. A 1949 250/3000 savage. It brings home the venison every year I decide to use it. I have owned four different pre-64 model 70s and all shoot very well. I just recently purchased a new model 70 in 25/06 and have yet to shoot it. There’s just something about model 70s either pre-64 or current models that seem right to me. I’m sure you’ll be happy with the one you got. It must be all those Jack O’Connor books and articles I used to read as a kid that makes me fond of the model 70.E49C2D7D-241E-4FCD-B7F5-8318979F1FC3.jpeg

1K6BRA,
That's a dandy rifle, in a dandy caliber!

Barossa,
Congratulations on the purchase of a fine rifle.
I'm really glad it's not a Manbun also! Lol

Congrats on a really fine rifle in a great caliber - one of the greatest calibers of all time.

The Win Model 70 was my first center fire rifle in the late 60's equipped with a 3 x 9 Redfield scope. It was a 243 Win and I hunted everything with it from ground hogs to foxes to deer quite successfully. Even with factory ammo it shot fine and never failed me. Mine was the "push" feed action - I believe these new models have the old "control" feed actions like the pre-64's which is one of the finest actions ever designed. It was called the "Rifleman's Rifle" for a reason.

I was a one rifle guy in those days due to limited financial resources but the 243 was truly a multi-purpose caliber for me. Hunting year round with one rifle helped build my confidence and skills. When I started reloading I began to take advantage of the full capability of the rifle and caliber.

Good hunting with yours.

Like most great gun companies, corporate buyouts killed Winchester. l think gun companies like Winchester are as lmportant to National Security as any other defense critical company.. You don't see major gun companies in other countries like ours... Ex.. Beretta has been in business for 500 years. l could name others

Here's a pic. I haven't mounted a scope yet, was thinking a Weaver Grand Slam 2-8x36 if I can find one. I have some 165gr Sierra HPBT pills to try in it. It's fired about 100 rounds. Would have preferred a 7x57, but this came up and was very clean, so I snapped it up.

I have several M70s and although I haven't fired them all (because some are NIB) the ones I have used have always been impressive. With my 284 probably being the one that stands out the most.... I've never been disappointed by any of them. I don't own any that were made after New Haven shut down either, so make sure you report back and let us know how it shoots.
Good luck with your new rifle.

The only Winchester model 70 I ever owned was one of the last few years of New Haven guns and had some of the most beautiful blueing I ever saw. They did a nice job on metal work up there, laminated stock was pure junk!

Natchez Shooter Supply still has the Weaver GS in stock.

Recently looked at a 264WM...liked everything but 1:10 twist! 1960s still???
Not sure what the hell bullet I could ever stabilize in that, certainly not any .264 cal Berger.
