Winchester Model 70 - late 80s model

Good morning,

I have a late 80s (1988 or 1999) model 70 Lightweight (not featherweight) in 223.

It is a push feed with a 22” barrel.

I have never shot it much. I have coyote hunted with it a few times, and it took it on a Pdog hunt once as a backup.

Thinking (unless not a good idea) of having it rebarreled with a varmint or heavier profile either in 223 or a 20 cal.

I have other rifles that are handier for hunting in typical Georgia terrain.

Would it be a lost cause to change it? I know they didn’t make a lot of this model.

Is the quality of a Winchester from this era worth sinking money into?

Just looking for ideas and input.

Thank you

Really like the Model 70's I have. Have a post 64 XTR in 243 Winchester that shoots just fine. Have a 2005 controlled feed that must have had all the stars line up for, so I won't brag about what this hunting rifle can do. Remember these rifles are not custom target guns, but with a little TLC, they can be very nice shooters. Would not hesitate to re-barrel any of my rifles and plan to with the 243. Re-barreling is a personal choice. Have you scoped the barrel and done your load development? Also don't know what kind of accuracy you are looking for.

It depends on what you decide to use it for that will make your decision easier.

To me, there is no rifle made in marketable numbers which should be put away and saved for posterity or a higher resale value. Those which have merit as being truly 'rare' should be protected but the vast majority can be repurposed to a more useful design. A collector though can convince anyone that nearly anything is collectable, especially if they own and want a higher price because they call it collectable. Let your conscience be your guide.

The action itself will be a good basis for a varmint rifle. Choose a top of the line barrel maker, pick out a new stock unless the original can be properly modified, and wait for it to get finished by the gunsmith of your choice.

Enjoy the process! :)
