Winchester Model 70 .220 Swift Heavy Varmint fluted stainless

Hi Guys
Hope some-one on the Forum might be able to shine a light on this problem of mine, i have a Winchester Model 70 Heavy Varmint in the fluted stainless barrel , it is the push feed version that has the claw type ejector, I think that the push pin ejector is under too much tension and thus making the bolt initially hard to close the bolt, when you go to open the bolt it opens OK ! after you have closed it .

This action seems to be damaging my new brass, can any-one shed any light on this problem or help me cure this ! problem easily

I believe the rifle to be of mid to late 1990s manufacture possibly 1995/7 and the serial number is G2156785 , I believe it has the ( Kevlar/fiberglass stock )picture included.

Regards
Steve

Hi Larry
Its mainly around the head of the case around the groove , it seems a bit harsh on the closing as though she is struggling to close on her at first, as I have said previously there seems to be a lot of pressure on the ejector pin when closing the bolt ! >:(

Please see 11, 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , & 16 on page 4 of the PDF below

The only times that I've seen the rim being messed up were caused by the extractor lead edge being too sharp & acting like a knife as it slides over the rim. If it's too sharp, you can blunt it off a bit with a cratex wheel.

I am very familiar with these rifles. The bolt face for a 22-250, 220S, 243, are all the same. However, the extractor is different for the Swift. Chance that the factory installed the wrong one and maybe you have a 22-250 extractor instead. Check the Serial Number on the action and under the bolt handle to make absolutely certain it the correct bolt for that rifle. (I got mine mixed up once and that problem your having is exactly what happened.)

Hi Tom
Thanks for that reply to my post about the problem with the Winchester .220 Swift bolt and extractor, I will check it out shortly as I have not been too well of late ! ???

Hope to put a picture up of the case damage too , this is not major its more to do with the bolt being stiff to close. :-[

Great guns! I bet he was feeling a bit of cock on close but I don't know that for sure. Gotta remember, it is a factory rifle and we can't expect little details like that to be just perfect from a factory rifle when we can't even expect it from all customs. Lots of variables too, and tolerance stacking with parts. Just my 2 cents. Those are very nice shooting rifles by factory standards though. I've had a few and they all shot well. The most accurate factory rifle I've ever owned was the same rifle in 22-250. A honest to goodness .25 moa factory gun is not a common thing. I think they had Wilson barrels on all of these. I know someone on here that should make happy to hear. Lol!

Yes, but he also said it was trashing the rim of his new brass,

Hope he got it fixed by now too, since he started the thread in October 2011 and didn't reply to some questions and requests for pics. Either way, I'd say there's a pretty good chance it's not worth worrying much about by now. Lol!

The ones I've had were very smooth. I'm pretty familiar with them and happy to help if I can but it's hard to diagnose something if I have to imagine what the problem might look like.

If you have a similar problem, post a pic and let's see what it looks like. Specifically the damaged rim.
