Winchester Classic 6.5 Swed accuracy potential ?

I have been asked to build a Winchester 6.5 Swede on a Classic action for a friends son. There are NO factory rifles available in that caliber.
He will be paying for everything, but because we can't find a new one in 6.5 Swede, I'm thinking of getting a new one in another caliber, selling the barrel, having custom one installed and getting the action trued up at the same time.

1. Can the classic action and custom barrel be made to shoot 1/4" inch or better hopefully at 100yd ?

I have never owned anything but Remington rifles, and a Custom 1909 Argentine I built. Not counting rifles I bought and sold for profit.

I know nothing about Winchester actions whatsoever. I once had a 375 Super Grade but sold that within several weeks.

I tried to talk the dad into a Remington but the young man wants a Winchester!

Why not, my .22XC is built on Winchester action, the last thing I wanted to hear was the first lazy, cry baby gunsmith that couldn't do it..

Finding a donor M70 Classic may be difficult and expensive. You MAY be better off with a Montana Rifle Company 1999 action. It's a Winchester clone but with a few differences. It has the cone and extractor cut in the action instead of cut into the barrel. It uses the same trigger design and safety and has the same footprint as a M70 except for a little bit of action that extends forward of the recoil lug where the cone and extractor are. With very little work at the front of the action you can use any stock inleted for a Winchester M70. It's just an idea if you are struggling to find a Winchester Classic donor. Good luck with your project.

I have a Model 70 with a classic action in 7mm Mag. I don't know a bout 1/4" rifle, but it is an honest 1/2" rifle with 3 shot groups. It has a Krieger #5 1 in 9 twist, Mcmillan SuperGrade stock, Timney Trigger, and a VX3 3.5-10x40 scope. I have gotten many Sub 1/2" groups with it. If a group is over a 1/2". I think it is nut behind the bolt and not the rifle. I also have a factory SuperGrade in 270 Win that was showing good potential until it got hot here in Texas. I haven't shot it anymore since. It is an honest SubMOA rifle and gotten a few 1/2" and a 3/8" group. I've got Remmy's, Savage's, and Winny's that will all shoot. If the nut behind the bolt, (me) does his job. If the smith does his job right with good parts. They take the time to work up a good load. The rifle should be a good shooter. 1/4"? Maybe, Maybe not. And being chambered in an accurate caliber like the Swede, the rifle should be capable of 1/2".

First off "22XC Guy", the father is a good friend as I said, I don't take my friends lightly enough to gouge his money out of him.

Thanks to everyone for their input, I'm just going to think on this some more. Buying a new rifle and immediately pulling the barrel and barrelling in a custom is not something I want to necessarily do, because as some one said, it is expensive!
Personally I wouldn't spend a great deal on a persons first rifle, but that is just me. Since I agreed to do this I will do as best as I can within a reasonable amount of money.

My first high power rifle was a 3040 Craig, not exactly known for it's excellence in accuracy and flat trajectory, but it went bang and did a credible job on deer. ;)

I found one on gunbroker. Model 70 in the swede for $1125. Unfired, as new old rifle, bought and stuffed in a safe. Stainless, too. 2 days left on the auction. Good luck. It's a feather light, too. Good luck. Josh.# 495979292

Even with Dwight Scott doing the chambering and Tony Boyer in the drivers seat amid a sea of windflags 1/4" moa ain't going to happen with that chambering, action, and sporter barrel combination. Not measured in an aggregate even with 3-shot groups. It may shoot sub .250"on occasion, but not at will.

Excuse me, I misread and missed the word "good" in your post.. But, I see no reason to build it, make a hunting wish be priceless.. Good friends should make it all balance out within a few dollars.. Besides, there's enough guys on this site to look in their backyards for a Classic..

Does it have to be a w70? What about a vz-24 or other sporterized Mauser? Sorry I know hear is set on Winchester, but new isn't same as old isn't same as pre64

Tikka T3 is selling factory riffle(s) in 6.5x55SW. But I don't know if it's available in US :)
