Winchester 760

Is Winchester 760 powder sensitive or insensitive to temperature changes? Looking to use it in a 6mm ARC.

Correction: I have a 6mm Grendel not a 6mm ARC...

Ron -

Howdy !

While I have read that WW760 is somewhat temp sensitive, it has sometimes been accused of that simply because it is a " ball " powder.

I used WW760 exclusively under Hornady 55SX along w/ FED Large Magnum Rifle Match in my " .22-35 Remington " wildcat; for shooting groundhogs.

I for a 4yr period, carried a 20rnd MTM case year round in my car; to insure I always had some ready-use ammo handy. This resulted in the rounds being repeatedly exposed to some pretty severe temperature extremes.... I'd say from sub-zero to around 160* F, and perhaps a bit higher.

Ended up using one of these rounds to kill a groundhog on a 425yd shot.

My point:
For me, as a practical matter; I did not see evidence of WW760 temp sensitivity negatively impacting my shooting in the field. But hey.... that's just me.

Several years ago HandLoader magazine ran an article on Accurate powders and stated that AA2700, H414 and W760 were the same powder. I use a lot of AA2700 and when I compare my loads (old lot of 2700) to the listings for the other two they are very close in recommended weights and velocities. Don't know if the newer lots are the same.

I would probably try 6.5 Staball if you are looking for a temp stable ball powder.
I’ve tried StaBall and it does very well, I’m trying powders I have sitting on the shelf collecting dust. If I could have foreseen five years ago what’s going on today with my beloved sport I would have bought 5lbs & 8lbs kegs of powder only. Now I can’t get the 6mm bullets I like, so I’m testing my surplus of supplies in my new cartridges to see what works…

When firing long strings like F-Class or Precision Rifle you will get vertical due to temp sensitivity. For hunting, short range BR or foolin around it is a great powder. My Ruger 77 in 30-06 with Nosler 180 Partisions is bad news to elk.

Boltman13, thanks for the heads up. I plan to take it out to 1K if I can but realistically 600 yards might be my best shot.
